Spent the evening nearby & was able to see the bridge in action when a freighter came through the bay. Awesome.

The bridge was extremely interesting as I had never heard of this type. It is in the Canal Park. Seating is provided for those who would like to sit to enjoy watching the bridge liftas boats and ships would go under it.

Visiting Duluth's lift bridge is a fun experience for maritime buffs and anyone else! The bells ring, traffic stops, the bridge go up and GIANT ore ships glide through. -So fun to watch!

We were lucky enough to see the aerial bridge go up or down multiple times. The place we stayed was in Canal Park, so it made it very convenient to walk down and see the bridge quite a few times. There's a schedule you can pick up outside or inside the museum at the bridge (also free), so check and see when one of the huge ships are going through. It's neatest to see the bridge all the way raised.

When the bridge needs to be raised, a warning alarm will sound and the loudspeaker announce that everyone needs to get off the bridge. It surprised me the number of people who would be walking on the bridge when the alarm sounded and would saunter along like they had all the time in the world. Not that you need to sprint, but it seems like a fast walk would be prudent.

We walked over the bridge twice. It was nice to see it from a different perspective. The walkway is fenced off from the cars, so no need to worry about traffic.

The Lift bridge has to be raised when ships need to pass to and from Lake Superior. This necessitates various hooting from ship and response from shore. Neither of these sentences adequately describes either the bridge which seems eccentric nor the manner of its' raising which is even more unusual. Quite a sight.
