If visiting Duluth, don't miss this fine museum tucked away on the lower floor of the old railroad Depot in downtown. The collection of locomotives and other railroad cars is impressive, and the history of northern-tier US railroading is very interesting.

I was super excited to do the "scenic" railroad trip up along Lake Superior. Sadly, it was "scenic" for a very short period of time. Each train car was packed; the AC in the car we were in was not working so it was uncomfortable (and the weather outside was maybe 70) and stagnant. We could not hear the person giving us information. The train rambled slowly along city streets and neighborhoods and trees - with only 10-15 minutes of traveling near Lake Superior. Honestly, I was counting the minutes until it was done. (This was a 90 minute tour.) The last half of the trip was difficult as many little children were screaming or fussing.

My suggestion to the railroad: Do a family tour and then do an all adult tour the next trip.

We were not the only ones frustrated. One woman at the end of the trip had the same complaints and gave them to the ticket booth man. He did not respond. I, instead, decided to post my thoughts on tripadvisor.com.

I would not recommend this trip at all.

If one old train looks pretty much like another to you, you are probably wasting your time (and considerable money) visiting here. If you have some interest (and you can always find something interesting here), you can do it in a couple hours. If you are somebody interested in trains, or especially a KID interested in trains, it may take you 3 or 4 hours. The assortment of trains was considerable-- six long tracks inside and 4 outside, plus two fully outfitted "sidings"-- assorted ancillary railroad equipment, a big model train layout, and an extensive old "main street" of shops typical of the age. There is some unique equipment, like a rolling log loader and a segmented, 128-ft. engine that was just huge. The snowplow videos (two of them) were downright exciting, don't miss them if you go. You can't go in many of the cars, but enough, I think, or you would be there all day.

It is an interesting museum for young and old alike. For extra adventure catch a short train trip. Check for tickets early, they are often booked full.

This is a great museum. Definitely worth your stop if you are in Duluth. Many historic trains, some of which you can go inside, lots of info to read. My husband, 6yr old son, and I loved this museum. Wish I could have spent more time here actually.
