Our first stay at Ruttgers was last year for 2 days and we enjoyed it. This year we decided to stay longer and were very disappointed.
While the property itself is great (access to the lake, beautiful setting) the rest is much to be desired for the high price.
The first day we had to ask for a room change due to the mold in our assigned cottage was so bad my wife and son had difficulty breathing. Our next cottage near the lake was VERY rundown- dirty carpet, shower didn't drain, poor plumbing,etc... At almost $300 a day it is clear that little if any $ is put back into some of the lakeview cottages. I saw some of the cottages were very well decorated and updated so I am unsure if those are operated differently.
The indoor pool area is very dated. Some of the windows are sealed with old duct tape. Outdoor pool is great. Nice view and clean.
Food was good. We had the buffet and there was a lot of selection.
I was surprised very few of the staff greeted us as we walked the grounds and enjoyed the property.
I know this place is a "Minnesota Tradition" and I wish we had a better experience because it has such great potential. But for our next up north vacation we are looking to Brainerd.More
