Weird Al wrote a song about it, Clark Griswold tried to talk the kids into seeing it, Guinness World Records recognized it, and we finally visited it.

Mind you, this is the world’s largest ball of twine created by ONE man – Francis Johnson...

“That's a big ball of twine!”
Reviewed December 25, 2011

Nice that you can get right up next to the ball of twine. I really enjoy seeing all the off-beat things and then exploring the smaller towns after visiting the attraction. This is a pretty area with lots of lakes and farm country. Would do this trip in warmer seasons to enjoy some of the beauty of Minnesota. Do winter if you want to see barren landscapes and wind-swept roads.

“It's a Big Attraction in Darwin”
Reviewed October 16, 2011

OK - so much for the pun. On this stretch of Highway 12, there's a whole lot of corn (miles and miles of it) and then pops up the little town of Darwin with the world's largest ball of twine - made by one person. Only a block off the highway, the ball is now protected by a roof and glass. It's a wonderful story and worth a quick stop. Make sure you sign the guest book in the rural mailbox.

“Glad we stopped!”
Reviewed July 24, 2005

We have driven through Darwin many times without stopping, well this past spring we had the time to stop--so we did.

The Twine Ball (made by Francis A Johnson) is kept inside a glassed in gazebo with a museum beside it. Well, the museum was not open when we were there, but one of the Twine Ball Museum workers happened to stop by while we where taking pictures through the glass. The very nice man opened the gazebo and let us take in the whole experience--the smell and touch of the ball. Then he opened the museum and gave us a "tour".

Inside the museum there is another really cool item on display. Mr Johnson also made a very large pliers carved out of wood that unfolds to make over twenty smaller pliers. The handles are like a large puzzle of pliers. This was done from one piece of wood--very, very amazing!!

They also hold an annual festival the second Saturday in August "Twine Ball Days". I haven't been there for that, but will make it some time.

Definitely worth the stop!!

5 Thank Scotia
