“Wedding Weekend”
Reviewed October 21, 2013

Very clean rooms and friendly staff. The only downfall was they put our room right next to the elevator so we heard everyone coming and going throughout the night. Also, found it weird that there were no alarm clocks in the room. You had to ask for one.

Thank you for your feedback on your stay with us. We have chose not to provide alarm clocks in our guest rooms as to provide an up north feel with out the distraction of time. We hope you come back and stay with us again in the future.

Have been here quite a few times over the last few years and have enjoyed it. The hotel is very centrally located in Crosslake, which was very nice. The rooms themselves are spacious and very clean, but the decor needs an update. The linens are a bit worn and the 'boat' for the tv was broken. For some unknown reason we did not have a fridge, but it was obvious there had been one in the designated space at some point.

Our biggest frustration was that a wedding was being held one of the nights that we were there. While the hotel was good about communicating with guests about a few areas being reserved and not being available, they did not handle the wedding guests well at all. There were numerous times individuals were slamming the fire doors (which had been closed for the wedding), multiple incidents of them pounding on doors and stumbling through the halls. We did hear the guests being reminded to be quiet but it continued for a few hours. Very frustrating after a long day I the rain, where you just wanted to settle in and rest.

Hopefully the management can give the staff some guidance for future events.

This is our second time staying at this hotel in the past 12 months. Lobby and outside of the hotel very nice welcoming to travelers. Me and my family stayed in the kiddie suite. My children enjoyed having their own closed off log cabin area with a set of bunk beds and their own TV. The two rooms are separated by a log wall with 2 cut outs for windows and a larger cut out for a door. So the 2 areas are not completely sealed off by any means, but it gives the kids a sense of their own room. The room also comes with a pull out bed too. I can say the king bed was very nice, and the kids beds also felt nice. The rooms were extremely clean, along with rest of the hotel, minus the pool water itself.
The kiddie pool looked clear, main pool was very-very-very cloudy, and the hot tub looked like a bunch of sand or something else spread across the bottom of the tub, hope it was sand. Told the front desk about it and they said they would have night management look into it. Kept the family out of the pool, not worth the risk. When we used the pool the year before had no issues, expect it was just a bad day.
Staff was nice during check in and check out. All employees we saw said hello and were very friendly.
Breakfast was good. Came with do it yourself waffles, cereal, yogurt, bagels, etc. Better then most hotels for breakfast I would say.
I would stay here again, with no issues. The entire hotel was clean and spotless, minus the pool water itself. I am still giving it 5 stars because everything else was so great, I assume the pool was just having a bad day.
Plenty of things to do in town, lakes, train museum, history log school and town next to travel info building near the dam. Plus not to far from Brainerd, Nisswa, Pequot Lakes, so you will not run out of things to do or see or eat at.

Room Tip: Choose any suite it adds a lot

We got a good mid-week price of $109 for a double queen suite. Beds very comfortable (all beds in the lodge are apparently the same). Breakfast ok - could use some more fresh fruit and less carbs. Coffee/tea available 24 hours. Our room on the main floor was right beside a row of big air conditioners outside which were very noisy if we opened the window to get fresh air (so obviously we couldn't sleep like that). Nice woodsy view just past the golf course. They have sort of overdone the "up north" theme with a wooden Indian chief in the lobby, big carved bears ready to attack in the common room, birds "chirping" in the halls, a moose themed bathroom, "logs" for our headboard and room divider - even a half of a "canoe" as the TV shelf. They'd have a really nice place if they'd update the decor in a more sophisticated way. You can still do woodsy with a muted color scheme.

Room Tip: Check out room first to see there are no AC units nearby if you chose the golf course side of the bu...

Thank you for taking the time to post your review. Our goal when building the lodge was to target the up-north feel as if you were walking into your own cabin in the woods. Yes our decor is very woodsy and we feel that sets us apart from everyone else which is what we wanted. We hope you come back and visit us again.

The rooms were quite nice. The resort ran a Groupon deal to attract travelers during the off season, and it was totally worth it. Activities in Brainerd at that time of the season are somewhat limited, but if you're just looking for quality time together, it was terrific. Staff was very accommodating to help find activities during the most awkward time of the season in northern MN. Too cold for summer activities like swimming, but too warm for winter activities like skiing or sledding. We went on fishing opener weekend and had fun doing that.

We generally stay at Whitefish Lodge at least once during the winter, typically in February. This year we were able to go twice, in February and March. We like going in February because we can take advantage of the complimentary snowshoes they offer. This year, we enjoyed building snowmen in the hotel's "backyard" while we had a winter fire in their fire pit. You will want to bring your own wood, or pick up a bundle at a local gas station. The kids love the pools. There is a small, wading-type pool for the little ones (our 2 year old loves that one) and a larger pool that gets to about 5.5 feet deep plus an over-sized hot tub. Customer service is great. When we were going up this weekend, we left late and didn't anticipate getting there until after 1:00 am. I called ahead and the front desk person kindly went up to our room and pulled out and made the hide-a-bed that we needed to use for our family of five. Our experience with the hide-a-beds is that they are fine for kids, but don't plan to use them if you are an adult - they don't have much support. The rooms have a refrigerator and microwave. We usually bring things for sandwiches for lunch, but they also offer Heggie's pizza - a family favorite. There is also a Rafferty's Pizza close by that is excellent. The breakfast that is included is great. They have a staff person that cooks the Belgium waffles for you. This year they added a waffle maker in the shape of a teddy bear. It was a hit with our kids! There are two nice lounge type areas with fireplace and the ambiance of the whole lodge is quite nice. The local train museum was a fun for our whole family, too. Our only complaint is that sometimes they seem to have trouble managing the chlorine levels in their pool.

Room Tip: If you are bringing the kids, a fun room to stay in is their lodge rooms, which include a separate r...

We recently booked a townhome through Sundance Ridge, which is a part of Whitefish lodge. My friends and I have stayed here many times a few years back. We were very excited to have an opportunity to all get together and celebrate a 30th birthday party. Sundance Ridge is very nice. Once the first townhome was booked we had enough interests that we needed another. When one of my friends volunteered to book the other cabin, she was told completely different information when it came to the cancellation policy. This was very frustrating to all of us as we tried to figure out who was being told the right policy. After speaking to the manager, what I was told is apparently the correct policy (you can cancel and get 100% of your deposit back if you do so before 3 months to stay). However, in the email confirmation it states you will only receive 75% of deposit back if cancelled within 3-5 months of stay. My friend and I were being told completely different things, as well as reading something different, getting clarification from the management which was different than what was stated in the email confirmation, was all to frustrating.

I had set an appointment to speak with the manager again, and she called almost 4 hours late. She also told me she would email out to me an update on the cancellation policy stating I would get 100% of my deposit back if I cancel 3 months prior to stay, and an updated price on the unit, but I never received it.

With all the hassle, and frustration, I decided to take our business elsewhere. This made us very sad as we have really enjoyed staying at Sundance Ridge before, but the lack of professionalism worried me too much to give them my business. As I was worried if a cabin needed to be cancelled months down, what would I be told then?

If you are planning on staying with them, make sure what you are being told is correct and reflects that in your confirmation email.
