“Great experience for our family reunion”
Reviewed August 12, 2013

The lodge and cabins are well maintained, the staff is extremely helpful and friendly. Many great activities (from Paddleboard use, Yoga classes, bonfires) are included with a stay. The lake is beautiful with clear water and sandy beaches. This was my second trip to Sugar Lake Lodge and I look forward to visiting again!

My wife and I were amazed by the amenities offered by the lodge. There is the golf course, of course, and the wonderfully clear lake, but the availability of bicycles, canoes, kayaks, paddleboats, paddle boards and two hobie cats, all without cost, makes this a wonderful deal for anyone who's active. The heated outdoor pool overlooks the lake. The flower-filled grounds are beautifully maintained.
So here are a few pointers. The rooms in the lodge and the cabins are right along the lake. The villas are condominium units and line the golf course; ask for one close to the lake if you don't want to have to walk very far. If you ask for a three bedroom you will have receive a two bedroom with kitchen and, next to it, a studio with a fridge and microwave. That worked fine for us. If you search a bit you can find a page on their website where they offer last-minute deals; there generally seem to be a number of units available at a good discount.
The biking is pretty much around the grounds but the surrounding roads aren't very busy. Bring your own bikes, though, if you want to use the area's biking trails. As for hiking, they may send you to the cross-country ski area three miles away; it's probably nice but when I went in July I found the trails overgrown. I'll be back with my skis.So it's basically a resort for lounging, playing croquet, swimming, boating, golfing -- plenty to do right there, with a very good, affordable restaurant. The fitness center, by the way, is predictably small but it has good cardio equipment and a stack of hand weights.
We really couldn't have asked for more. In the morning they'll take you out on the pontoon boat and give you coffee and scones. In the afternoon you'll pull up an adirondack chair and put your toes in the water; then, in the evening you'll want to build a fire at one of their fire rings (plenty of free firewood) and watch the stars come out. And, if you're really lucky, Casey, a local banjo playing story teller, will regale you one evening around the campfire.

I attended a conference and the kids were able to paddle board, canoe, take out a fishing boat, and swim in a heated outdoor pool, a real delight in Minnesota weather. Storms happened at night and during the final day of the conference, which made for great sleeping weather after too high temps this summer.

Room Tip: Our villa was way out toward the road and was a long walk to Otis's Bar and Restaurant (excellen...

Went on a girls weekend with my mom and my daughter to this beautiful resort. The first night we stayed in a lodge room which was clean and beautiful! The second night they let us upgrade to a 2 bedroom cabin that was open and because it was on the internet specials for that night we only had to pay the difference of $15!!! This cabin was beautiful! Right on the lake. Clean, clean, clean!! None of that musty smell you usually have at other cabins I have stayed at. The grounds are so well manicured and beautiful. The size of the hanging flower baskets and plants I thought I was in Jurassic Park! All of the water toys are included in your stay: kayaks, canoes, paddle boats, life jackets are all available for use from the cute well oranized and maintained boat house. We went on the Pontoon Coffee Cruise one morning (again, included in the price of your lodging) and had wonderful coffee and homemade blueberry muffins - all included!!! They also have yoga on the beautifully manicured lawn on some mornings. Every single staff member was so nice and friendly - all of them!!

Room Tip: If you wait to make your arrangements a week or so ahead of time and stay during the week you can ch...

This resort has a lot to offer. Rooms in the lodge of various types, rustic cabins and condos on the golf course. There is golf, tennis, boating (free canoe, kayak and paddle boat use with some stays), dining (Otis, sitting by the lodge fireplace, gift shop, pro shop, croquet, bocce, heated swimming pool and of course, the lake. The staff is very friendly. We loved sitting on the deck and having a glass of wine. This would be a GREAT location for a company meeting or conference. One group meeting there brought their families along. Perfect!

Room Tip: If you can, I would advise getting a room with some kitchen facilities. There are restaurant facili...

This is our first time here. Overall experience was very good. My only dissatisfaction was with our room. I was expecting a larger room with more amenities and a little more upscale. Was very small and basic bed and bath. Bed was uncomfortable and split into twin beds. Could hear everything our neighbors were saying at a regular speaking volume. TV did not work well either. The course was in great shape despite all the rain we've had. Staff was very friendly. Great views and food. Chris was exceptional!!! Very customer focused and always found a way to make us feel welcome and no request was out of the question. We had a great time and may visit again in the future.

Spent 1 night in a room on the 18th fairway. My wife and I were celebrating our 41st Anniversary. We stayed in a small room with a king size bed. The bathroom was huge and had a jet tub. We also had a private patio. The room was very clean and comfortable. We played their 18 hole golf course in the afternoon. It is a challenging but "fair" course and each hole was very scenic. They allow you to use bikes, canoes and kayaks for free. The lake is absolutely beautiful. They had a great staff and great service. If you are looking for quality that is affordable for a couple or a family, this is the place. We will go back again.

Room Tip: There are many room options available. Go on line and choose the best one for you
