A great experience from beginning to end. The staff are very accomodating.

Room Tip: The Asplin Suite is a great space for a small group. Self contained, private.

Stayed here as part of a three day work conference. They had a group checking out that morning and all of us that night (but it still kept them at pretty low occupancy - around 80 guests). The front desk was unable to accomodate an early check in for our specific room, which I guess is understandable. You could tell they were at a skeletal crew for cleaning, dining, and front desk. The front desk girl was very "blah" about her job, not even a smile. Seemed like she was hung over both mornings. Anyway, once we did get in (Suite 607) was very nice, it had a full kitchen stocked with all of the pots, pans, dishes and silverware, papertowels, towels, salt and pepper, everything. Full fridge, microwave, oven, stovetop. The sitting room had a gas fireplace and a huge deck overlooking the lake. The deck had a nice rocking chair, table and chairs, and even a huge gas cooking grill. The only thing that sucked is that room had a really really small tv (like maybe the size of my computer screen). The bedroom had a queen bed or smaller, another tv (this one bigger) and a dvd/vcr player. The room also had a huge hottub, but the jets didnt work and when I called Mrs. Happy at the front desk she didnt offer a solution, so we just did without. It would have been nice customer service skills to apologize or offer maintenance or another room (not that we would have wanted to move at that point, but still). The bathroom is very small but clean and well equipped with lots of towels and a nice shower (water pressure was a little weak). The food servce for our meetings was great and they had really nice breakout snack options too. Overall I was happy with the stay and would recommend this place. I think it would have been all the better if not in the slow season. It is quite a ways from town though, probably at least 10 miles.

Room Tip: long windy halls, ask to be close to a door.

I stayed in a golf villa, very nice, lots of room, nice patio. Everyone at the resort was struggling with access to cell phones and wifi. You would see people wandering around like zombies looking at little screens and watching for signal indicators.

Great place if you are on vacation and don't need to be connected to the outside world. Very frustrating if you need to be in contact with your office, etc.

Room Tip: Villa's are nice, lodge rooms are pretty standard budget hotel.

My husband and I met my family at this resort for a long weekend. From the moment we arrived we felt completely at ease and welcome, not to mention, the scenery and resort is beautiful. Our room was a small lodge room, however, this was not an issue as my parents got a larger suite which provided A TON of room for everyone. This resort is located on Sugar Lake which was surprisingly not horribly busy, which fit our needs perfectly. It was nice to rent a fishing boat and spend the morning on the lake without having to worry about huge wakes and big pontoon parties. We spent the whole weekend at the resort, except for a short trip into Grand Rapids for supplies and a trip to the Judy Garland Museum, and we were never bored. The lake was great, the beach was perfect for everyone including the 18 month old in our group, the food was great, and the service at all points of the resort was fantastic. The two changes I wish I could make would be having later bar hours (bar closed around 10) and allowing pets.

to give a great review, because we don't want the masses coming to enjoy this little bit of paradise! A wonderful time was had by our dozen! Golf course was in fabulous shape (except for traps after a 2" downpour). Loved the Wine Down cocktails/hors d'oerves on the deck. Had a great time on pontoon and hobey cat. Kids enjoyed pool as well as lake, kayaks, paddleboats and bikes. We enjoyed nightly campfires. Had nice meals and good drinks at Jack's. Also grilled from our townhouse, which had a brand new grill. Townhouses are 2 & 3 bedrooms and a bit older than the lodge rooms. The landscaping/flowers were beautiful.....

The internet was somewhat spotty....which was only problematic for kids. I rather enjoyed not being connected :)

The thing that stood out most was that the staff (at pro shop, at Jack's, at marina, at front desk) all seemed genuinely happy to see us and tried to take care of every little detail to ensure a successful visit for us. They even provided a shuttle service to Hibbing airport for one of ours....enabling the rest of us to get another round of golf in!

Room Tip: book early?

We chose Ruttger's because this is where a wedding reception was being held and I was in the wedding party. Our room was clean and comfortable, and best of all- it was cool in the middle of a scorching hot July weekend with heat indexes over 100. Our patio door opened out into a quiet semi- private area with a great natural setting butting up to the golf course. We got food to-go at the restaurant and it was very good with a generous sized sandwich and portion of fries. Breakfast at Otis' Restaurant was very good as well. Nice hot buffet of breakfast fare. We thought our room was not going to be cleaned because we occupied it for a large portion of the day but in the short time we were away mid afternoon for a wedding, the room was quickly made up and cleaned.

One thing to be sure you clarify is your breakfast and payment. There are packages available to golfers and others but this was not made clear to us. A friend of ours (not golfing) was told to "enjoy the complimentary breakfast" and my husband also heard the same thing. Under that premise, our first morning we were not given a bill of any kind after enjoying the hot breakfast buffet. (they also have a continental) The second morning the server asks us if we wanted the ticket split or all on one. We were all stunned and said “What bill? Breakfast is free, we were told this at check in, and we weren’t charged yesterday.” Upon the server checking, we were billed for the $10.95 buffet. Disappointed and confused seeing as how we led to believe that breakfast was complimentary, and the discrepancy does leave a bad impression. I filled out a satisfaction survey and mentioned this and received a friendly apologetic reply from the owner who explained they do have deals where breakfast is part of their golf packages, but they still do actually pay for it in advance as part of the package. They do the same for groups attending the resort for a meeting. So this was all simply a misunderstanding that was not clearly communicated to their staff; at least not ones we were in contact with.

We traveled from the Twin Cities for a long weekend with our daughters, 12 and 19. like most families it seems like all we do is run, and our hope was that we could just spend a couple days relaxing.

Our drive from Lakeville (south of the Twin Cities) took about four and 1/2 hours because we stopped near Lake Milacs for lunch (return trip on Monday was 3:45 minutes). The resort was easy to find, large signs showed the way from HWY 169. We checked in and were given directions to our townhome on the 8th green of the golf course and spent the next three days enjoying the relaxing beauty that is Sugar Lake Lodge. The restraurant offered good food at very reasonable price points. The marina offered a number of paddleboats, row boats and even a cat for sailing included in the stay, the golf course in excellent shape, and also very reasonable, and behind each accommodation was a camp fire location with wood privided by the resort.

In all, Sugar Lake Lodge provides a wonderful northwoods resort experience, at prices within the bdgets of most families and I would highly recomend it.
