Just came back from Grand Bahama, were we stayed in West End at the Old Bahama Bay Resort. Quaint with sun, beach, pool, bar, music, restaurants, fishing and very nice people. If you want more, Freeport/Lucaya is only a 30 minute cab ride away.
Absolutely, the most relaxing place. Nothing too extravagant.

My first experience to the Bahamas and unfortunately it will be my last. Overall, OBB is a very nice resort setting wise, but here is the down and dirty. Accomodations are very nice with excellent furnishings. Surrounding landscape very well maintained. Infinity pool also nice. If you want to do nothing on your vacation, this is the place for you. Now the bad part. Execution. The Straw bar (one of the resorts poolside restaurants), continually disappointed with staff inattentiveness and food quality (hour and a half to get a burger?). Guest services couldn't set up a message for my wife. One must sign for beach towels (are they serious?). Be warned, that if you spend more than 3 days here, you will be bored with the food selections. Strongly advise you stop by the Winn-Dixie on the way from the airport to pick up some provisions. Meals can get expensive in a hurry. Last advice: Use the bug spray.

This was a nice facility, however, you have to want to be away from everything. It was our first trip to the Bahamas. It looked like a great place if you enjoy boating. There was a beautiful marina. The gardens were nice and well maintained. The rooms and housekeeping services were excellent. There are three restaurants on property. Staff friendliness and helpfulness was mixed--some were wonderful; others not so much. (May be due to rumours of the facility being sold to Ginn.) Service at the dockside restaurant was abysmal and we just didn't feel the "love." The other restaurants were good, but not consistent. Considering you are away from the other options, the goal should be to make you not WANT to leave the property. They did offer free use of games, kayaks, sailboats which was fun. We rented a car and drove into town to tour around one day.
Overall, good place for reading and relaxing. Nice pool. Beach looked nice, but the water was just a little cool to get in. There was some sea vegetation at about waist level depth. I would take into consideration what was you want to do and type of experience you expect before booking here. It'll be great for some; a little too low-key for others.

We just returned from a 5 night stay over the Thanksgiving Holiday. I have read a lot about OBB and thought this was the perfect time to try it with our 2 teen daughters. The weather over that time was very windy and was only warm enough to lay on the beach about 3 of the days. The room was lovely (we were upgraded to oceanfront from OV). I had the best nights sleep on the great mattress. The rooms are advertised as having a kitchenette but its really a glorified wet bar. There is only a small bar sink, small frig and a microwave. Not enough to do any serious cooking so chose your groceries accordingly if you are planning to eat in at all. We did ask for a toaster so managed to do some lenders bagels and pop tarts for the kids. We did not have a washer/dryer in the room as well but there are machines at the marina for a reasonable fee if you need them.
We stopped at the Winn Dixie on the way to the resort for breakfast foods and drinks-----remember that they do not sell beer and wine so ask your driver to stop at the liquor store as a first stop from the airport.
The place is very quiet and 45 minutes from "anything". We rented a car one day and drove to Lucaya to look around, shop, have lunch and check out the casino at the Westin. At OBB there are kayaks, hobie cats and I heard great snrkling. There are also bicycles that we enjoyed riding around and checking out the new home construction.Othere than that be prepared to have plenty of books. It was exactly what we were looking for though our daughters were bored.
Food at Aqua was excellent, Bonefish Folleys was good and lunch at the Straw Bar was also good. Over Thanksgiving they had a few "theme" dinners. Thanksgiving buffet at Aqua was very good even though they did not have our reservation.
The staff at the hotel was the warmest and friendliest we have encountered in all our travels. Nothing was a problem and they tried hard to please in all ways and remedy problems ASAP.
In all a lovely resort-----great for families with small children or for those looking for some serious R&R!

My husband and I made one final escape to the warm climates before our true winter hits. We manage to get an inexpensive package through ---.com as well as cheap flights on Delta.

When we arrived in Freeport and then whisked away to the resort (about a 35 minute drive), we noticed the extreme damage Frances and Jeanne had done two hurricane seasons ago. However, the island seemed to be kicking back swiftly but as I'll get to, it may take a few years to get fully restored (especially the trees).

In any event, we arrived at the resort with a somewhat unceremonial greeting (didn't they send a car to pick us up?). After finally getting a king-bed room (which we had asked for), we quickly enjoyed the final few hours of sunlight with a walk around the resort.

Unfortunately, this walk took about 5 minutes. As previously mentioned, the hurricanes made a direct hit on the West End and the resort's surrounding area is just rebuilding. This is not a knock on the resort itself (stay in the Phase 2 buildings), the small and coral sand beach, pool, gym, food at Aqua - all were great. But we like to be a little more adventurous and it was tough to see the town of the West End in rough shape. And we were surprised that the resort hasn't undergone better replanting of vegetation in the area. The hard coral rock ground outside the resort is not very romantic.

And it was hard to believe that there really is no beach around the island, besides what was made at the resort. (If you want to sit on the beach and do next to nothing, this is the place for you). The resort, which comprises of a huge marina, is selling ocean lots and putting more of the effort into selling and building homes. In addition, they are building a couple of golf courses next to the resort. Given that, we constantly heard back hoes, earth movers and pounding of nails. (If you have ever been to Dubai recently, you know what I mean). And there is still much to be cleaned up as well. All this work and we're afraid another big storm will wipe it out again.

One final note - beware of the bugs! Use the Off! that is provided. The sand flies are relentless and you will be itchy in a day's time.

Overall, we were extremely pleased with the value of the resort (thanks luxury link). But I'd wait a few years before we go back to pay top dollar.

You can't go wrong with Old Bahama Bay. A wonderful experience in upper end resort living, even for just a few days. The rooms are all water or beachfront. Fabulous patios and outstanding huge firm beds. Best impressions come from the feeling of serenity. Small resort, no jet skis, plenty of activities if you what, but non-intrusive staff to leave you alone. Leave the mega Westin and Sheraton in Freeport to the families, go for the good life with fine food at Equa and wonderful breakfast at Folleys Bonefish bar and grill. Can't say enough about the friendly staff. The front desk and guest relations will treat you with smiles and respect. Enjoy the marina with fishing boats and mega yachts, rent a car to go to Bishops place on the East end. Or just do nothing. A fabulous place to enjoy life. But do it soon. The West End will be different in years to come, a "Atlantis" style resort will eat up the entire west quarter of the island with 1000 rooms, 2 golf courses and thousands of people. It might help the local economy, but this place will be forever changed.
