“Should be on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives, or Roadfood!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 15, 2014

Short version:
Pros
-Friendly people, Mickey's actually owned by locals - not a chain.
-Excellent selection of subs and pizzas. The pot roast sub was amazing.
-Take and bake deluxe pizza had wonderful toppings and sauce. Just seeing a pre-made in the cooler sold us one!
Cons
-Off the beaten path
-Potentially 'scary' to people who only go to chain places.

Long version:
The Emptynesters saw Mickey's a block away while shopping in Brainerd. The 60's-70's drive in architecture caught our eye. We drove by but did not stop that day because we had already eaten. Last Wednesday Mr. Emptynesters needed some new haberdashery (new Fruit of the Loom t-shirts and socks from Target), so we left the lake place and headed into Brainerd. On the way Mr. Emptynesters checked the Tripadvisor and Yelp reviews. Then the Emptynesters asked themselves the question, "Would we rush to Micky's if we were in Hawaii or Phoenix, instead of Brainerd, MN?". Answer - yes.

Mickey's is a very nice example of an older eat-in/drive-in restaurant (like Tops on Diamond Head in the 60's, smaller menu though). We were impressed by the selection of hot and cold subs and tried the pot roast sub (mainly because we'd never seen a pot roast sub before). Excellent with a whole-wheat bun, pickles (a Ms. Emptynester favorite), and American cheese. We were going to both get subs, but they had some premade take and bake pizzas in a cooler by the register. The deluxe looked great, so we got one sandwich for eat-in and the deluxe for dinner at the cabin. Good choice on our part - the deluxe held it's own with Heggies and Lucky's in Pequot.

We were there before the dinner rush and the restaurant was extremely clean. They also have a website with the menu. (A plus because many 'up north' restaurants seem to feel a free Facebook page is all they need - trust Mr. Emptynesters, the web will pay off for you).

Bottom line - we will definitely be back often and strongly recommend Mickey's to you (and the producers of the above shows).

“Worth a visit”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 14, 2014

It is worth a visit for the hot pot roast sub. Pizza is unremarkable. Subway has a better topping selection for cold subs. This is a jefferson lines bus stop so your run the risk of running into a bus full of people.

“Friendly people. ”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 10, 2014 via mobile

Dont usually like to rake folks over the coals but I had a sandwich and it was 100% awful. I dont understand all the positive reviews either. Bland and gross. Threw 3\4 of it away. Wasnt expensive but I would take subway over this any day. Saw them making pizzas and though they obviously hand made they looked frozen quality. Again I dont like to be negative but I stopped here, read like 10 positive reviews so I tried it. One of the worst sandwiches I ever tasted.

“the best subs anywhere”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 4, 2014

They have the best subs anywhere and buns are so fresh. I like them better than Subway with comparable cost.
