Ruttger's Birchmont Lodge

My husband & I own a cabin on Star Island in nearby Cass Lake. When we lost power & heard it could be 3 days until electricity & running water would be available, I called Ruttgers & booked 3 nights. Simple corner room in the lodge. Staff was helpful & friendly. Food reliable and all a great value for July 3-5. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

The Ruttger's Lodge restaurant is one of the few restaurants located on the shore of Lake Bemidji, and it's well worth the cost. The furnishings and interior are very similar to the many National Park lodges I've eaten in.

If you go, don't leave until you've eaten their walleye. If you're not familiar with this member of the pike family, the walleye is Minnesota's answer to lobster. It's expensive, but well worth it. Don't bother getting it deep fried; that's a waste of the fish. Get it pan-fried or broiled. Their Perch is also nice... if you're travelling as a couple, I suggest one of you get the perch, the other get the walleye, and try to share!

Room Tip: For the full dining experience, eat in the dining room. Leave the patio for the "young crowd.&q...

We stayed in a cabin for a week. The cabin was older, but had been updated and was very comfortable. We loved the screened porch with a fantastic lake view - just about 50 feet from our door. The cabin had 2 bedrooms and a small bathroom, but everything was adequate. If you're a fisherman, this is the place for you. It also is near to 2 popular state parks - Lake Bemidji - just down the road, and Itasca, about 45 minutes away. Both are worth visiting. Bemidji has plenty of shopping and restaurants. Ruttger's also has a restaurant, and breakfast is included with your stay. It's a buffet breakfast but is very good. In the evening the restaurant has a full menu, and the prices are reasonable. There is also a bar/restaurant which is very good. There is a small beach in front of the main lodge and also an indoor pool and workout room with sauna. Boats can be rented and canoes an kayaks are free. You can't beat the location and scenery, and the staff was always ready to help you in any way they could. This is a nice resort and has a history that goes back many years, but it is still a good value for the money.

We Spent Memorial Day Weekend here.. We had a two bedroom Cottage which was alittle outdated but was very clean... Cabin had everything you need for a weekend get away.. Free breakfast in the morning and a free bag of ice everyday.. View from the cabin was awesome.. Location of the resort was great.. Short ride to the Blue Ox ATV trails and to the State Park.. Staff was very friendly.. Nice and Relaxing overall.... Would recommend this to anyone..

I spent Memorial Weekend here. The cottage was old, but well maintained. The only complaint would be the shower. It was hard to get the right temperature and the nozzle did not work properly. The view of the lake was amazing and I fell asleep to the waves. There was cable TV and WI-Fi along with a fridge and microwave. Most important was LOCATION!!! An easy drive to town as well as to the State Park. It was also only 45 minutes to Itasca State Park . If you don't expect modern accommodations and want a wilderness feel, I don't think you will be disappointed.

The entire property has seen its better days. I sympathize with the plight of Minnesota resort owners, particularly in a buyers property market, but today's leisure traveler has both expectations and options. That musty lake odor in the "villa" did bring childhood memories to mind, but the nostalgia soon passed to be replaced by an impression of slow decay. If it had been high summer, the outdoor amenities would have taken the edge off my critical observations.

With that said, the accommodation served its purpose, the furnace and water heater worked well and the amount of living space was perfect for our group of four. The liberal pet policy and newer indoor pool facility are bonus factors. The few staff members with whom we interacted were friendly, efficient and helpful.

It's what you expect for an average/less than average Minnesota resort. Outdated, but probably bustling in the summer with drunken hoards of wedding attendees, high school reunions, and the like. Nothing really wonderful nor really horrible about the place. But it is probably too expensive for the quality of the place.
