Great walk along the beach and a good 'grunt' back up to the car park. $5 fee but well worth going to see the Caves - you have to work around the tide

The caves are big, but I was expecting to be completely bowled over by them which I wasn't. The walk in is nice and the caves are at the end of another stunning Catlins beach. In terms of effort versus satisfaction, I rate the McLean Falls much more highly.

To get there the walk was some what challenging for the little ones but beautiful through native bush the beach like most on the catlins was simply stunning an the caves were breathtaking magnificent you felt so small next to them! We sore a giant crab scurrying through the caves the kids loved that! The guide was lovely and I didn't resent paying the money to get in. We went early when it first opens and there was only one other couple!

Well worth a visit. Take a camera, walking shoes and be prepared to wade through water. You can drive to the car park from the main road (4WD not needed) or you can walk there 2km. Check tide times as the caves are only accessible for 2hrs either side of low tide. A small charge, NZ $10, needs to be paid to walk down to the beach. The walk is fairly tough and takes about an hour return. Once on the beach turn left, heading towards the cliffs. The caves are just round the headland. Depending on when you go and the height of the tide you may have to wade through water to enter the cave. When we went the water was about knee high.

Be sure to check tide times before arriving. The sight is accesdible about 2 hours around low tide only. After that the caves are filled with the ocean. The cave openning is huge and mskes you wander how many waved it takes to gradually dissolve the rock this way. The beach surrounding the area is also wonderful. Allow 30 minutes walk each way from the car park.
