“Friendly & Welcoming”
Reviewed March 18, 2014

Staying here was a lovely contrast to the chain hotel we'd just left. The location is wonderful, so peaceful & tranquil, our room cosy and comfy, but the real highlights are the owners, June & Murray. They couldn't have made us more welcome, and just sitting with them in their lounge, in front of a warm log fire, drinking tea, eating scones and talking to them was a real delight. They went out of their way to recommend things to do, and sorted out a reservation at the local restaurant.Really glad we stayed here.

Lovely country farm location with a beautiful garden and very clean/comfortable rooms with their own en-suites.Very short dirt-road ride to Niagara (and NZ's very own Niagara Falls).
June welcomed us with friendly chatter in addition to tea/coffee and jam scones on the garden table. Murray was a very attentive breakfast host - providing cereals, fruit, yoghurt, toast and any cooked breakfast meal you might ask for - and supplier of local information and activity guidance. He'll even give you a guided tour of their very extensive farm.

Room Tip: Book early for your choice of the two best rooms with en-suite bathrooms. One has kitchenette and la...

This three-bedroom home is close to Curio and Porpoise Bays, close to the Niagara Falls Cafe, and a good place from which to explore the Catlins. Comfortable rooms, well-appointed bathrooms, fully-equipped kitchen. Buy groceries before you get there if you are planning to self cater.

There are few rooms to be had in the far south area of New Zealand called The Catlins, and this is a great choice. Better than rooms at the farm are the three bedrooms, good for a family or couples traveling together, that are the proprietors' eventual retirement home. The house faces a lively lagoon with shore birds and is close to Curio Bay with its dolphins and the nearby beach where yellow eyed penguins live. Breakfast is up at the farmhouse where sheep-shearing may be a feature. Hosts are friendly and breakfast is top notch.

I feel slightly awful only given this B&B a very good rating. It is very good indeed but we have now stayed in three quite outstanding B&Bs in New Zealand and whilst good this one is not quite up there with the very best. We were made very welcome , had a nice large room with excellent shower room and breakfast was good. It is on a farm and very remote so there will inevitably be some trade offs. We enjoyed a visit to the sheep shearing at the next farm after breakfast before we left. The Niagara Falls restaurant nearby is very good and the penguins and dolphins easy to see. I would definitely stay here again if we ever came to the Catlins again. With good weather as we had it is the most beautiful place.

We got to the B&B after driving all day. We had a warm welcome by June and Murray on this cold rainy day. After sharing my passion for Merino wool with June (empty my luggage to show her myMerino collection), we took the time to share a bottle of wine. We were going out for dinner, but we were concerned about driving at night. Without hesitation Murray volunteer to drive us to the restaurant. What a nice gesture from him. Too bad we could not stayed longer and did not have enough time to visit the farm. A perfect place to relax after a long day.

We had a tremendous welcome from Murray and June: it more like staying with friends than as guests in a B & B. We were welcomed with cups of tea and cake and then a glass of wine each evening before we went out for a meal. We had a lovely spacious room with views of the garden and it’s own outside sitting area. The breakfasts were very good with a wide variety of choices. The Farmstay is located in an isolated spot and there is not much choice of places to eat but was a great base to explore the Catlins with helpful advice from the hosts.

Yes this is a special place in fact last nights guests visited the yellow eyed penguins and saw 5 . since they are nesting this was amazing to veiw them on the fossil forest at curio bay
So pleased you enjoyed your stay at our place it is very relaxing and an oasis away from the coast which is actually only 10 mins drive so handy to the endangered wild life such as the Hector's dolphins and the yellow eyed penguins ..the Catlins is a great place
