Catlins Farmstay B&B
Reviewed July 11, 2011

A highlight of our NZ trip. Murray was an excellent host and we learnt a great deal from him about life in the Catlins and the challenges facing farmers. The room was splendid, clean, bright and airy with direct access to the lovely garden. We drove out to see him and his sons at work on his sheep farm, and would advise future guests to do the same if invited.

We stayed with June & Murray for 2 nights at the end of our 3-week New Zealand vacation. Upon arriving, we were welcomed into their home with tea and scones and lovely conversation. The breakfasts offered a lot of variety and everything was incredibly fresh. Our room, which was in the back of the house, was spacious and the bathroom was great (with underfloor heating). The Catlins are remote and we saw very few tourists around (but spotted several penguins!). Unfortunately, we had bad weather while we were there - very wet, cold and WINDY! And yet, we still found the area to be gorgeous.

A hidden gem in the magnificent Catlins-Great accommodations in a wonderful setting with beautiful gardens surrounding the homestead. June and Murray were great hosts- very helpful, friendly and hospitable. It was enjoyable staying at a working sheep and deer farm.
Good breakfasts!

June and Murray are great hosts - lively and interesting. The Catlins are worth including in your NZ itinerary and this is most definitely the place to stay! Shortly after we arrived, we enjoyed tea and scones with June and Murray while they told us about the area and their farm. They then recommended the excellent local restaurant for dinner - superb lamb, followed by sticky toffee pudding to die for!! Our bedroom was spacious and very comfortable. After a hearty breakfast, we spent some time on the working farm. This is a special experience and one not to be missed!

This is one of the nicest and friendliest farm stays you are likely to find in New Zealand. June & Murray treat you as one of the family, and can't do enough to help. This is a working farm, and you have the opportunity to see it at work if you want to. June has also spent many years cultivating a wonderful garden.

The room was lovely, really modern, light and airy with views over the garden. Great bathroom and shower. Very comfortably furnished, with basic kitchen facilities, and all spotlessly clean.

It is fairly remote, off of the State Highway, on a gravel track. There is just one small restaurant nearby (2kM) which has superb food. It is a good base for walking the Catlins Forest Park.

Breakfast was good, June cooked essentially whatever you wanted, we had great bacon and egg, preceded by fresh fruit etc.

If you want to sample the best of New Zealand's rural life, this farm stay B&B will not disappoint.
