“Fabulous food, friendly services, what more could you ask for”

We had the pleasure of dining at the whistling frog cafe during our honeymoon in new zealand.

We rolled up at the McLean Falls Eco Holiday Park, which is where the cafe is located, rather late but were met by a friendly face who booked us in to the camp site and mentioned that the food in the cafe was pretty good. Even though we weren't planning on eating out we changed our mind later on and went back, and that proved to be a rather good decision.

When we got in the cafe was full of locals, which is always a good sign in our books. We got one of the few remaining tables and were given the menu by our extremely friendly and helpfull waiter. Minutes later the chef himself appeared, despite the place being packed, to explain to us the specials for the day. We decided to each have one of the specials, bluenose cod for me and a seafood chowder for the wife. This was actually a started but they said they could make it into a main for her.

We got our drinks and food served in good time, about 30 minutes or so, and boy was it worth the wait! The cod was simply amazing, with sweet potato mash that was out of this world, and the seafood chowder was so full of delicious fish you couldn't get a spoon full without it even if you tried! Not at all like we're used to in the UK, where you'll be struggling to find any fish at all usually..

Also had a desert which was pretty awesome as well. One of the very best places we had the pleasure of dining out in during our whole 3 weeks in NZ

Granted it wasn't the cheapest of places but not by far the most expensive, and considering the quality and quantity of the food on offer I'd say pretty decent value for money.

In short, if you're in the area, don't miss out!

“very rude”
Reviewed November 9, 2010

Weekend just been a group of eight adults and three children stopped in for coffee and lunch.
$39 for 2coffees 3cans of coke and 2 bowls of chips was a bit over the top, but oh well.
Others we were with ordered toasted sandwiches, after waiting 45mins they went and paid for there drinks and left without there sandwich as it had taken so long. time was getting on and we went and asked for our chips to go. When they finally came out again 45minutes after we paid for them, they were not chips at all but chunks of potatoes. These were for the children and there was no way they were going to eat them as the thought they were getting chip. Anyway we were just going to go when a lady who worked them came out ranting and raving about how they don't do french fries and that it clearly stated on the menu that they were potatoe chunks. Then she went on to say that they don't even do toasted sandwiches and that they had gone out of there way to accommadate us, which is all very well and good. When we ordered we didn't look at the menu, they could of just said that they don't don toasted sandwiches and we would of ordered sonething else and that their chips were potaoe chunks.
In the end she ripped the bag of chips out of my husbands hand and gave us back $7.
$32 for two coffees and three cokes.
We live in Southland and quite often my a trip thru to the Caitins this isn't the first time we have stopped at the whistling frog but it is the last time.

As they have technically been to the Whistling Frog before they would already know that this restaurant is not a fish and chip shop. We don't have a deep fat fryer. Two coffees and three drinks are not $32. So this is a fabrication.

This group was told up front we do not sell chips, we sell oven-roasted sauteed potatoes. They wanted toasted sandwiches, which are not on the menu. We stated this to the customer, yet they did not want anything else from the menu. But we still did our best to accommodate them, informing them that it would take longer to prepare as it was not a menu item and the toasty machine had to be heated. They assured us they were not in a hurry. It is unfortunate that they did not appreciate our efforts. Two of their party left their toasted sandwiches, did not pay for them and drove away. We try to do the best we can, yet sometimes people take advantage.

“Extremely helpful and willing to share eco info”

We called for a coffee after walking to the cathedral caves. We orderd a flat white and a long black with a scone (jam cream) to share, I thought the 5.50 for a scone was a little expensive but when it came out I was pleased we only ordered one it was huge and tasted like it was fresh out of the oven, very yummy and we were asked when half way through did we want any extra jam and cream. As we were leaving I purchased some glass frogs for my garden, and then we got chatting with the lady about how they use recycled glass in the garden which we were very intersted in, so she showed us the glass crusher they had and their daughters school project of biodegradeable pen,

“Great spot all round!”

Stopped in for an evening meal and breakfast during a brief overnight stay at Christmas a couple of years ago now, and the food and service were both excellent. When I next get back to explore the Catlins Coast again, I will be making a beeline for the Whistling Frog Cafe!

“Great food at a great price.”
Reviewed February 19, 2009

I was pleasantly surprised by The Whistling Frog Cafe. The decor is fresh and clean, the service welcoming and prompt, the menu nicely balanced. My lunch, the spit-roast lamb, was moist and tasty. I loved it! My companion had the lamb burger and announced it perfect.
While the dessert menu looked tempting, we refrained. But rest assured, we will be back.
