“Great Hotel Experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 12, 2014 via mobile

The only reason I did not give the hotel a 5 star rating is that it is located just off of one of the main streets in Baxter, versus somewhere more secluded with scenic views. The room was spacious, clean, and beds were comfortable. The hotel is tastefully furnished in a "Great North Woods Lodge motif." Hotel staff were pleasant and helpful. Good restaurants within walking distance and an above average complimentary breakfast.

Thank you for the great review. Spacious, Clean, comfortable beds are always our first goal and you couldn't have given us a nicer compliment. We did our best during construction to try to blend location and North Woods and like yours we get many compliments on the decor. A pleasant and helpful staff is also a must, I'm glad succeeded and you saw the fruits of our training and genuinely caring staff. We are a small family owned hotel and your responses mean a lot to us. I hope you had a chance to check out Prairie Bay, the restaurant right next to us, they are one of Minnesota's finest dining experiences and get many fine write ups in the culinary magazines. Thank you again, I hope you have the opportunity to return soon. Mark

This hotel is very family friendly. The waterpark is the perfect size for our kids (6 & 5). The hotel staff are friendly and helpful. The lifeguards actually do their job, and were kind in doing so. The breakfast was great, rooms were quiet - overall excellent stay for the price. We have stayed here twice now and will return.

Thank you for the great review. I get many, many calls from young families like yours asking if their younger children will have fun in the water park. I always tell them about reviews like yours. I'm a Grandparent now and watching my grand kids at 3 and 6 in the park is unbelievably fun. The huge smiles children that age have on their faces are making memories they, and you, will cherish for a lifetime. Thank you also for your comment about the lifeguards, that gives them a very good sense of satisfaction when their efforts are recognized. And the best comment of all was the fact you've been here twice and will return again. In my book that's the highest compliment a hotel can receive. Thank you for being our guest. Mark

If you like to be around screaming kids between the hours of 7:00am and Midnight, then by all means, you'll enjoy the clean comfortable rooms. We weren't expecting peace and quiet, but we got the impression right away that this was going to be an unusual experience when we saw the family of 8 checking into a standard room 2 doors down the hallway from ours, and another multiple family group checking in with 2 cases of Bud Light per family. Our hallway served the function of indoor dry playground until well past 11:00pm Friday night. But it was the mother exercising her toddlers outside our door at 7:30am that was the real treat. As for the waterpark, apparently anything goes. There's supposed to be a "no outside food/drink" rule, but it was obvious that wasn't being enforced, folks were playing dodgeball and running/swimming like lunatics in the "lazy river," making any sort of leisurely float on an innertube impossible. Far more important, it's small, and when they pack the hotel 8 to a room, plus bring in community groups for birthday parties, don't expect much from the experience. When I went into the kitchen to inform the young man on duty that the coffee was empty less than an hour into the breakfast shift, I caught him bent over the counter, beet red and sweating. So, he was either recovering from the night before or sick as a dog. Either way, yuck.

Mark, Thank you for taking the time to comment on your stay here at our property and your comment on "Clean and Comfortable", I'm sorry there were some problems during your time here. It's important for you to know that each and every comment is shown and discussed with each employee involved to help us continually improve our service. As an owner and GM I spend a lot of time on the property and I can honestly say that balancing what is fun to some and disturbing to others is very challenging. With 68 rooms and one water park completely full of families of all ages on March weekends, that challenge becomes paramount. I think it's also fair to say that each person has a level of expectations as well as tolerences which also enter into the equation. Please know, we don't put 8 people in a room unless it’s a multiple room suite, which are in the area you stayed in, but I'm sure it happens sometimes without our knowledge. Many times when friends arrive and one of their rooms isn’t ready they do go to the others room to wait and start using the water park which is actually what we recommend. The water park does get very busy on weekends and as you stated we do take birthday parties and a limited amount of outside swimmers but always stay within the boundaries of State codes balanced with guest consideration. We do turn away outsiders when peak occupancy levels are approached in the park. This is the area where what’s fun to some can be disturbing to others so our lifeguards are well trained in where to draw the lines and a supervisor is present if questions arise. If there's one person on our staff that continually gets good comments from our guests it's the young man you saw as "beet red and sweating & recovering from the night before or sick". Be assured he wasn't sick or recovering, he's a very hard working person and we do run on weekends to keep the breakfast stocked and the coffee pots full. He a super clean cut young man that lives at home; he's a good student and a non-drinker/and non-smoker. It may be you caught him at a moment of exhaustion or just regrouping in a non-guest area of the hotel for a minute. We all do that on occasion before we go back out "on stage" in front of guests, I'm sorry you found that offensive. I'm only bring these points up in order to help explain a little of what happens behind the scenes on a busy weekend in most hotels everywhere and not trying to make excuses or change the perception of us you left with. That is our number one goal to see that every guest has a good time and leaves with a favorable impression in hopes they will return someday as I hope you will. In your case we failed in that goal and for that I sincerely apologize. Mark

We stayed as a family in two rooms on the 3rd floor, a king suite and a double suite. Both were very roomy and had nice rustic decor. The rooms were clean and well maintained with nice towels and flat screened TV's. No issues with heating or cooling and all the fixtures worked as they should. The breakfast was good with a good variety of items (eggs, sausage/ham, waffles, toast, english muffins, small muffins and pastrys, 3 kinds of cold cereal, hot cereal mix, milks, hard boiled eggs, milk, juice and coffee). Coffee was available int he lobby at all hours.

The property is showing some wear and tear with age but it still has alot of life left. Having worked in the Hotel industry I'm kind of picky and keep an eye out for certain things. My observations of the "small things" most would not notice was minimal. The staff was excellent from the front desk to housekeeping and the water park life gaurds. The water park is a nice mid-sized facility and has enough stuff to keep everyone interested. We used to go to WI Dells for our winter water park getaway but I'm glad we tried this place. We will return!

Scott, yours are the kind of responses we exist for in the Hospitality industry. "The staff was excellent from the front desk to housekeeping and the water park guards". As a person that has worked in the industry you obviously know what counts. Our hotel isn't brand new, I would never try to convince anyone it was and family oriented hotels do take a little more abuse than a strictly commercial property, that's a fact. But we do try to watch the small stuff like you noticed. Service, cleanliness, and providing a lasting memory are the goals we strive to achieve. Thank you for the great review and thank you again for being our guest. I hope you can return soon. Mark

We stayed here with a group of 18. This hotel is located near many eating establishments and some shopping. From the start the staff was very friendly, informative and very helpful. With families with many children we prefer to have rooms next to each other with adjoining doors. The staff made sure this request was met! As stated in some of the other reviews there is some wear with the room. I however expect this when staying in a hotel made for families! The staff in the water park area were GREAT! Super friendly and made sure the kids were safe and having fun at the same time. The outdoor hot tub is to die for. My only complain is that there seemed to be a lot of locals spending the day there and they were hiding beer outside near the hot tub area. The breakfast that was included was also good. Thanks for the welcoming stay!

Thank you for the great review. Our staff tries very hard to accommodate the requests of groups. Everyone wants to be close to friends or teammates when traveling so if at all possible we honor the request. Sometimes it's like working a giant jig saw puzzle to make the rooms come out right but there is a sense of satisfaction on the staffs part when it falls into place. You had a good group of people with you, were glad it worked. If I've said it once I've said it a thousand times a friendly staff is absolutely mandatory in todays world. We have our share of problems as does any hotel that houses a lot of family groups and teams so its a genuine heart warmer to hear comments like yours. The indoor/outdoor hot tub is one of our best features. To sit outside this winter with as cold as it's been and be toasty warm is a real treat as you said. I wish I would have known about the beer being snuck in around the outdoor tub, I love confiscating beer! :) Thanks again for being our guests. Mark

My husband, myself, and our children had never been here before and wanted to try out a new waterpark so I reserved a Queen Suite. The moment we walked in, the front desk was very helpful and prompt. The rooms were very nice, especially for the price! The waterpark was on the smaller side for others in the area but our kids had a great time (ages 4 and 7) and there was a lot for them to do and the indoor/outdoor whirlpool was very enjoyable! The lifeguards were very attentive and would always go the extra mile to make sure every kid was having a great time! The breakfast was typical but for being free, you can't complain. I would definitely recommend and we are planning to come back in a few months!

Thank you very much for taking the time to review us. It's music to my ears when a guest says things like " the desk staff was prompt and helpful" and "the lifeguards were very attentive" because as I've written before, all we have to sell is service! We do our best to keep our rates as low as we can but price never overcomes poor service. Thank you again and I hope you do come see us again soon. Mark

My daughter and I stayed here overnight after heading back to the cities after a concert in Bemidji and we wanted a halfway point to stay overnight and not make a 5 hour drive late at night. We found an internet special for a Sunday night stay and figured we just needed a bed to sleep in and weren't particular about all of the ameneties. I have to say, we were very impressed with this hotel. The staff was amazingly friendly and went out of their way for us no matter who we encountered from the cleaning service employee to the staff making the breakfasts in the morning. The hotel is extremely clean and well kept up. We are considering planning a trip to come back to the area to see some sites and we will definately stay here. Great breakfast selections, wonderful staff, the waterpark looks really fun for families. Don't hesitate to book a room at this hotel. The room itself was wonderful as well. We were a bit sad we didn't get to enjoy more of it! My 17 year old daughter commented "mom, why do we end up with awful rooms when we plan ahead for nice vacations and now we get a great place and we have to leave right away?".

That has to be one of the nicest reviews we've ever received, thank you. We work very hard to see that staff is welcoming and polite and when it wows a guest like you it make us feel great. Bemidji isn't very far away so come on back! There's nothing to much more relaxing than sitting in the indoor/outdoor hoy tub on a cold wintery night, your cares will melt away. Thank you so much for the time to review us, and most of all, thank you for being our guest. Mark
