We have just returned from 4 days at the Al Husn hotel. We stayed in a deluxe sea view room, which ha d a nice view of the bay (and you could hear the surf breaking from the balcony!).

ROOMS: the room was extremely comfortable; good mattress; blackout curtains; excellent shower; very quiet aircon. Mini bar with plentiful soft drinks (including tonic water - reason for mentioning that about to become apparent!). Only negative was the lack of sockets in the room. Only a plug socket on one side of the bed. I would expect one on each side at least - most of us travel with multiple phones/tablets nowadays.

POOL AND BEACH: Beautifully maintained. The hotel was quiet when we were there so we didn't struggle to find a lounger. Being given a coolbox with cold drinks and the pool staff coming round with fruit snacks was absolutely excellent. The weather was unseasonably cool whilst we were there, and we found the pool temp a little cold, but that could just be us! Absolute BLISS that it was adults only. Being able to lie peacefully by the pool was exactly what we wanted - and the main reason why we booked this hotel. We didn't use the L'Occitane Spa - prices were very high - a one hour massage was costing around 55 rials plus tax (around £130). I'm sure it would have been excellent, but we didn't prioritize that spend.

RESTAURANTS: buffet breakfast in the hotel was excellent. Really wide selection of food plus additional hot food to order. Sure, service wasn't the fastest, but it's not exactly the place where you tend to be in a rush! We had a very nice dinner on the terrace at the fish restaurant Bait-Al-Bahr at the next door hotel and one evening we had room service which was well presented, hot and good value.

Afternoon tea was very enjoyable. Highly recommend having arabic coffee with your pastries.

Sadly the Sultan had died the day we arrived, and as per Omani law, no alcohol could be served in any bar/restaurant/venue. We were able to consume room service alcohol though. We had been warned of steep alcohol prices in the country and had arrived with our own bottle of gin (also available to purchase in Muscat Duty Free when you land). As the mini bar was complimentary with soft drinks, and the hotel were swift at delivering an ice bucket, we could sit on our balcony and have a G&T whilst watching the sun go down.

The middle day the weather was appalling - torrential rain and cold. What we DID notice was that were no real communal areas for sitting out other than outdoors (or the entrance lobby area). I understand that rainy weather such as we had was very unusual, but we did end up being holed up in our room (drinking G&T's mind!).

After the drinks ban was lifted we had one day left so went for drinks at the BAB lounge. It's a lovely roof top bar above the fish restaurant - with heaters which were needed when we were there and meant to have music every evening. We were surprised it was so quiet - we didn't realise that whilst the alcohol ban was lifted, the live music ban continued for 40 days!

To sum up, it was the hotel provided exactly what we had expected/booked. A very comfortable stay, lovely service, peace and quiet and good scenery.

The best resort I've visited. Extremely family friendly. An array of activities for kids of all ages. The splash pad was a highlight as well as the lazy river. Exceptional service from all staff members. Beautiful setting between the yellow Omani mountains and the ocean. Would love to return to this resort.

The Shangri-la is pretty big - like a village and consists of three hotels - Al Husn is the more luxurious one and the private beach and the breakfast terrace is worth it. The building itself is not exactly beautiful but all views are and rooms, terraces, atriums etc are all very attractive and well equipped. You have access to a high number of restaurants and bars in the entire Shanghai-la complex and a lot of sport facilities including sailing, tennis and gym classes. About 30 minutes drive by taxi to city center for the few but attractive sights.
If you travel with children you go for one of the two other hotels in the complex. They will have great fun.
Staff very friendly and a place of optimal relaxing.

Beach is amazing, incredible sunlight, location in the rocks and the view can't be beaten.

Hotel itself has many amenities and restaurants. The key thing being that you can go to the other Shangri-la restaurant, beaches and use their facilities, but the visitors to the other hotels can't use the Al-Husn's.

Again, restaurants are really high quality, but not extortionate. The free drinks and live music in the middle square in the early evening really sets the vibe for a chilled night. Wide selection at breakfast, while maintaining quality across the board, which isn't easy.

Rooms need updating. Particularly, why can't hotel rooms have a plug by each side of the bed? Come on everybody has a mobile they charge at night. Need to upgrade. Plus no option to stream from the room TV. These low hanging, but unpicked fruit cost the hotel the full 5 starts for me.

We have been staying here for several years, always enjoyable and we have seen improvements over the years. On this visit there were new showers by the beach and the canapés were vastly improved.
It is always good to see familiar faces and to meet new members of staff all of whom maintain the impeccable standards of care.
The beach is our favourite location and it was upsetting to see the damage caused by very high waves, good to know that the beach will be restored. I hope that the turtles continue to nest as before.
So once again out thanks for a great stay, we will be back again this year.
