Ambitious menu, and good quality food, service is friendly but lacks finesse and space is cavernous. At the time, the front door was broken and had been for a while, making for odd entryway. I have been for brunch and dinner--dessert a real strong point here.

Yes, the Bahn Mi craze has come to Ypsilanti! But something happened to the bread when it got here. The baguette became a steamed bun. And it was good.

Last evening, a friend and I went to Bona Sera, a new establishment that opened in July. The place has an interesting history, evolving from an underground supper club supporting non-profit charities into a rather large brick and mortar space on Michigan Avenue in Ypsi. The interior is remarkably spacious with table seating, a settee, some attractive art, and a menu written on chalkboard. The menu is truly eclectic with everything from a pasta special to shrimp and grits to the aforemetioned Bahn Mi sandwiches. Ordering is done at the cash register and food is picked up at the counter. We ordered a chicken and cilantro Bahn Mi and a spicy shrimp Bahn Mi. (They also offer a more traditional porchetta Bhan Mi.) Both came in steamed buns and both were very good. At eight bucks apiece, the Bahn Mi also represented a good value.
