If you are looking for a unique getaway weekend where you can actually make your own snowshoes and take them on picturesque hikes, I recommend joining Rhonda and John Smit at the Silent Sport Lodge. They will guide you through the construction of your snowshoes then take you along their many beautiful hiking and cross ski paths into the woods and along the Sturgeon River. There is so much to explore along these paths lined with animal tracks, deer beds, a beaver dam and antique cabin. Birding enthusiasts will enjoy a beautiful variety of birds attracted to the many birdfeeders just outside the sunroom and living room. Occasionally, an eagle will make an appearance or fly by. The lodge and amenities are not only attractive but also very comfortable. Rhonda and John are warm, gracious hosts who make you feel right at home! Together, they create delicious homemade entrées, jams and syrups using many homegrown ingredients! We’re looking forward to our next visit!

THE most beautiful, not so rustic rustic, B&B I've ever stayed at. I was stunned that it is 18 years old. It feels like it was built yesterday. Clean to a fault, roomy, yet very private. The rooms are spectacular as was the food, the grounds (30 + acres), the wildlife and, of course, the hosts. John & Rhonda clearly have a lot to be proud of and warmly share their preserve. I felt much less like a paying guest at their inn than a new found friend joining them at home. I WILL be back.

Room Tip: I saw them all and all are great.

A winter wonderland of snow, birds, friendly hosts and terrific breakfasts! If you are looking for a pure natural experience this is the place. We enjoyed snowshoeing right outside the door in the woods and by the river. It was breathtaking. Rhonda & John made us feel warmly welcomed. You come as guests and leave as friends. The bedrooms and baths are very clean and tastefully decorated. You can't go wrong at Silent Sport Lodge!

What a super retreat, tucked in the woods with no traffic noise, only a silent stream slipping by silently below the lodge. Hostess Rhonda Smit took us on a private guided snowshoe tour (giving us snowshoes to use) along the stream and nearby woods and beaver pond, which proved the outdoor highlight of our 3-night stay. Indoor, the breakfasts that Rhonda created were delightful, the perfect combination of special tastes, stories about the homegrown quality food, and a quantity which was sufficient without bogging down our stomachs before the morning ski. Rhonda and John made us and the other guests feel part of a family, chatting, playing cards, watching pine and evening grosbeaks at their feeder, etc. Socializing with new friends made this vacation! Each comfortable room abounded with natural art brought indoors, thanks to their interior decorating creativity and skills. We appreciated the guest refrigerator and microwave and the spacious common rooms to gather and relax. Rhonda and John's spot-on advice about local ski spots and restaurants, etc. ensured that we had a satisfying experience both at the lodge and throughout each day.

Room Tip: All rooms are distinct and high quality. You cannot go wrong.

It's been a few years since we stayed here, but I thought I would review it since we have stayed multiple times in the past. In fact, I was trying to get a room here for the 10/6/12 weekend and it was booked. Disappointing, but I am glad they are doing well, as they really deserve it. We have always had great rooms at the Lodge, breakfasts were very good, and the homemade maple syrup with a touch of smokiness added to the experience. We made snowshoes while we were there and took a trip around the property when they were finished. It has trout fishing right down the hill, and you can get a massage by appointment. Great place & we will be back. John & Rhonda are great hosts.

As one who is never hesitant to point out the failings or successes of any venture, it became difficult in terms of doing so for the Silent Sport Lodge. Why, you ask? Because this hidden gem is such a find that I, selfishly, wasn't sure I wanted to share it with anybody else! Since so many others on this site have shouted their praises, I decided that I must chime in as well.

Having been fooled about other properties by well-positioned cameras and flowery descriptions, I've become very carefull about booking any lodging. Still, with all the research possible, you really never know what you're going to get. One step into Rhonda and John's B&B and I was sure that their River Cabin was going to impress as well. We were not dissappointed! So perfect was our stay that we wished we had booked it for a week and forgone our next stop in Traverse City. As one who always had a dream of owning property on a trout stream, this home-away-from home really fit the bill for the required stress-relief! As fully stocked as your own abode, all you need is a quick trip up to Indian River for a few groceries. Perfectly located for the day-tripper, it is reasonably close to Mackinac, Harbor Springs, Charlevoix and Traverse City. The golf mecca of Gaylord is close by and so are several trout streams, besides the one out your back door.

Even though we had some cold nights, we opened the bedroom window for the sound of the soothing stream. Two weeks home and I still find myself daydreaming about a good portion of our stay with our wonderful hosts, Rhonda and John. We shall return!

Sometimes we stumble on the right place at the right time. Nestled back in the woods just a short stroll from the river you'll find the Silent Sport Lodge. You'll thoroughly enjoy your hosts Rhonda and John...they are gems. John will fill you with information about the area and places to go while Rhonda will fill your stomach with scrumptious breakfasts that are all homemade and beautifully presented. Rooms are themed, roomy yet cozy and very clean. Love that they are environmentally friendly too. You'll enjoy just sitting by the river, taking walks, birdwatching, just enjoying the sounds of nature or maybe spend the day being a tourist...Mackinaw Island, Indian River, Petosky are less than an hour away. Everything I've read in the other reviews pretty much sums it up. All I can say is, "This is the place to go."

Room Tip: Stayed in the River Room...loved sitting on the little balcony in the morning, writing and just list...
