Review of El Charro

El Charro
Ranked #144 of 278 Restaurants in Troy
Price range: $8 - $15
Cuisines: Mexican
Description: El Charro, owned and operated by the Martin family, is renown for consistently providing authentic, delicious Mexican cuisine & their famous tacos. El Charro has always been a Fraser community staple, with a beautiful decor and unique atmosphere, with original Mexican recipes derived from Delia's parents, Consuelo and Rosalio Rendon. Great reviews and guest satisfaction have always been a priority for El Charros & the Martin family and have become pillars for their growth. Since its conception, George and Delia Martin and their young family, Ed, Jeff, Mark and Lynn, worked long hours to establish a thriving family oriented business they are very proud of. Following in the family tradition, the grandchildren also work at the restaurant, making it truly a family business. The original Fraser, Michigan location opened in 1971, with financial backing from George's parents, George, Sr. and Lila Martin. It was then a small full service establishment with a seating capacity of just over 45 patrons. El Charro quickly began to grow & In 1978, the capacity doubled in sized to 90 seats. In 1980 a new 60-seat restaurant with a convenient drive-thru window opened in St. Clair Shores. By 1992, the original Fraser location, still not large enough to accommodate the growing crowds, led to the construction of a new 240-seat restaurant in downtown Fraser. Its third location in Macomb, with seating for 120 patrons, opened to quite the fanfare in 2004. El Charros newest location was established in Troy with a seating capacity of 96 and just celebrated its second year anniversary. The Martin family would like to thank you for your business and invites everyone to "Experience the Essence of Mexico" at El Charro.

“Poor value, Slow service, Food mediocre at best!”
Reviewed August 18, 2013

This was our first time, and our last! Mostly because of the taste of the food. The shredded chicken puffy taco was awful, the shell had a disgusting flavor and soggy texture. After one bite I was done. The chicken chimichanga was tiny and the chili they covered it in was unappealing. The chicken quesadilla was just ok but hardly worth almost $10.00 for a 7" appetizer. I guess this explains the lack of customers.

“Food so inexpensive that it is "very good"”
Reviewed July 19, 2013

If you judge El Charro purely on taste, then it is more average than very good. We had some hits and misses. The chicken fajita burrito was pretty tasty and my boys liked their ground beef tacos and chicken "Mexican sandwich". I thought the beef enchilada was ok - I did not care for the brown sauce, but was happy about how non-greasy the ground beef was. I found the salsa to be too much like ketchup, and the chips and guacamole were nothing special. However, the prices are very inexpensive and the decor was surprisingly nice for this style of restaurant.

“Average food, slow service”
Reviewed May 29, 2013

Went here on a Saturday night. There were people in the restuarant, but they were far from being slammed with orders. The service was polite, but very slow. Considering the not too busy conditions, it didn't make sense for such slow service. The food portions were large, but the quality was average. The prices for what you get seemed a little high. The salsa was quite good. It helped to make their otherwise forgetable chips palatable. Their medium salsa had a nice kick to it without overpowering you.

Am I glad I went to El Charro? Yes. Would I go back? Probably not. I still think the best Mexican food is down in the Mexicantown area of southwest Detroit. A bit of a drive for sure, but worth it.
