If you want miles of lightly traveled roads with good shoulders - Old Mission Peninsula is just the place. The lighthouse has bike racks if you want to explore the tip on foot and there are a few little stores around for light snacks & drinks.
OMP is a (foot-powered) biker's paradise.

Just wasn't that exciting...charge to go upstairs, horseflies that bite, dirty water...it's not a bad view - just not that exciting.

Lovely drive from Traverse City. Nice beach front. Cute historical cabin on the grounds in addition to the lighthouse building. Staff friendly and eager to answer your questions. Beautiful lighthouse and a small general store. Lots of picture opportunities.

Very friendly staff working in the gift shop. They explained that you can stay at the lighthouse for $200/week as a volunteer who runs the store, makes repairs, does general maintenance, etc. They gave us a tour of the residence quarters as the shop wasn't very busy at the time we were there. Definitely worth the drive.

This landmark lighthouse is located at the end of a picturesque drive along M-37 through cherry orchards and vineyards, Mission Point Lighthouse stands as a classic piece of Michigan history. While it no longer guides mariners through West Grand Traverse Bay as it did from September 10, 1870 until it was decommissioned in 1933, Mission Point Lighthouse now offers visitors a peek into what life was like around the turn of the century for lighthouse keepers and for others who lived and worked in the area at the time.
We were surprised to find it already open when we visited in mid-May. Everything was sparkling clean and the displays were well explained and very nicely done. There was a small gift shop open with just a few items for sale and the beach and view surrounding the lighthouse are just wonderful! If you have the time, bring a picnic lunch and walk some of the trails. It's a great place in the summer because it is surrounded by beautiful blue water.
There is a small fee to tour the lighthouse on the inside, but you can use the grounds, trails, and beach for free if you wish.
