Owner description: Hawthorne Vineyards is a friendly boutique vineyard and tasting room destination just four miles North of Traverse City on Old Mission Peninsula. We're passionate about making finely crafted, small production quality wines from our estate fruit. Our 80 acre site is nestled into a ridge above Peninsula Drive with postcard views of East and West Grand Traverse Bays. Hand crafted wines are created from the vineyard’s acreage of Pinot Noir, Pinot Grigio, Merlot, Lemberger, Gamay, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Gewurztraminer, and Riesling. Surrounding traffic and disruptions vanish as guests make their way up the winding private drive to the most peaceful and serene vineyard destination on Old Mission.

Yes, this is one of the newest vineyards in the area....and yes, in my opinion, they still have some growing up to go to.

First off, the parking if pretty limited, but easy to negotiate. We had no problems in this area.

Next, the views are very nice, but in an area like Traverse City, these types of views are not uncommon.

On to the building, nicely put together with a fairly large tasting bar and a very nice deck with a wonderful wood fireplace to help keep you warm on the chiller fall days. The cost for five tastings was $5, a very reasonable price.

Lastly, and most importantly, the wine and service. Hawthorne has a limited selection of wines available and unfortunately, all four of us who came thought all of the wines were very tart. Even the late harvest Riesling which we were told was their sweetest, was far from sweet. Now all four of us have a pretty wide range of wine likes and again, we all felt their wines needed a little tweaking. We also were unhappy with the service we got. Though attentive, the servers lacked a warming personality we found at other wineries.

When we come back to this area in the future, we will probably stop in again to see what changes if any they have made. We hope them the best.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us with a review. I'll certainly pass your evaluation on to our winemaker. We do list our acidity levels on our website under each technical data sheet. Higher acidity levels can be perceived as increased tartness in a wine, something that is a factor of cool climate viticulture. We are introducing more sweet wines from the 2013 harvest that we expect to have out for our May opening next Spring.

New winery on the peninsula..but very positive feedback on their service! Beautiful tasting room and everyone seemed to have a good time. Don't miss this one.

Only surprisingly good because the winery is so young. The views are amazing and the wines are quite good. They really need to have the option to let people eat on their beautiful deck. We brought food, and were told we could not enjoy it there. I highly recommend the Gamay Noir which is one of the best wines in the region.
