Awesome burrito. Everyone I was with really loved their meals of tacos or taco salad as well. Definitely make the trip here for lunch. Cute little outdoor patio, small shop, quick service, reasonable price.

We ate at Spanglish after taking tour of restoration project at the former Traverse City Mental Hospital. This is a must eat at place located on the grounds of the project. Food was very delicious and staff very friendly.

Having grown up in Mexico, I tend to be very picky about good Mexican food. I was quite skeptical when my friend suggested going. Although is a small locale, the people that work there and the food they prepare are incredible. The salsas are not necessarily spicy, but they are complex. Not just peppers added to tomato sauce. The tamales are excellent, as are the tacos and the tostadas. We took our food over to Left Foot Charlie's and enjoyed a glass of wine that paired perfectly with our meal. The Jamaica (hibiscus tea) is strong and not overly sweetened. The food is carefully prepared and authentic. Very different from your average taquería, or other run of the mill Mexican restaurant. Highly recommend it!

We love to eat "local" when we travel, trying to limit the amount of "chain-restaurant" food intake. We were in the mood for Mexican, when we stumbled on this in one of the food-guides at our hotel. This is a tiny little place, with a limited menu, and no alcohol, so if you are looking for that type of place, back to the chains!

First of all, they have taken the grounds of the old Traverse City State Hospital (a huge psychiatric hospital which closed about 20 years ago) and are in the process of reclaiming the buildings into practical purposes. For example, one of the giant multi-story buildings is being made into senior housing. Another one has restaurants and shops in the bottom, condos above. The coolest thing, though, is they are using all the original buildings! They didn't just knock it all down and start from scratch. This little yellow building that you see in the picture above has probably been there for 80 years, and now, it's a restaurant. Right behind it is another one, with cheesecakes and other great stuff. Across the street, a wine bar. Across the other street, a pizzeria. You have to go, just to walk these peaceful grounds.

Now, the restaurant. We each ordered a tamale, having had our first real ones in Indy just a few weeks earlier. They tasted very good, but were a bit smaller than we had hoped. Next time, we'll get two! (They were only $3 each, so that should have been a clue.) We also had a great basket of chips and homemade salsa.

This is not a sit-down, full-service restaurant; it is more like a take-out restaurant, that happens to have seating! You order at the counter and if want to eat there, they'll bring it to your table. (Only a couple inside, with four large picnic tables, outside.) Either way, we enjoyed it, and will try it again, if only to get the pork tacos that we didn't try this time!

NOTE: Many places close at 6-ish, including this one. Get there early!
