Owner description: Brewery Terra Firma is a brewery and farm producing culinary-inspired brews in a responsible, sustainable way. Visit our tasting room to sample our creative, balanced beers that we produce using whole ingredients, not flavorings or extracts. The brewery is situated on a small farm minutes from downtown Traverse City where we produce some of the ingredients used in our beers.

This brewery is south of downtown and it's not the easiest place to find, but once you're there it's well worth sampling their many unique beers. The actual brewery is a stand-alone building that feels more like the inside of a brand-new commercial building than it does a brewery. Not the typical vibe you get in most breweries, but this isn't your typical brewery. Very laid-back and somewhat quiet atmosphere (at least when I was there). They don't have a kitchen here, so look elsewhere if you'd like a brew and burger. I wouldn't spend all day here, but well worth the visit!

Just opened in July. Great addition to the growing list of craft brewers. You can work up a thirst just finding the place, but it's well worth the search. There is an excellent variety of brews for every taste. The staff if very knowledgeable and friendly. I asked our server to pick a flight for me based on what I told her I liked. Seven out of the eight were perfect suggestions.

My only complaint is that they don't serve food at this point but you can bring in your own. They have a limited amount of snacks like peanuts and pretzels, but nothing substantial. I would also suggest to the owners that they have a better lit sign on the road. We drove right past the place in the dark. That being said, if you like beer, don't miss this place.

The building is brand new and definitely off the beaten path. You won't stump across the brewery by accident, so be sure to program you GPS to find the one. The staff were helpful at selecting our beers. We created our own beer flight sampler tray. Each sample (3oz or 4oz, I can't remember) was only $1. So it was a great way to try out new beer styles.

Thanks for the kind words. We offer three ounce samples in any combination that you choose - as many or as few as you like - so as you pointed out, it is a great way to sample our beers.

While located aways out of town (heck, aways from *anything*), Terra Firma is well worth the trek. For the limited amount of time they've been open, they've manage to produce a nice range of varied, and diverse brews, and done so very, very well. Better yet, they plan on adding more taps to taste in the future.

While they don't offer sample "flights" you can get 3-ounce pours of anything on the tasting menu. And a visit includes their beer "menu" to help you with your selections.

Two important notes, however: Terra Firma does not offer food--just Michigan-made snacks only. But you're welcome to bring food in with you. In fact, the bartender told us that some patrons even have food delivered during their visit to soften the hassle of bringing their food in from elsewhere. Second, Terra Firma is decidedly NOT a sports bar or media hangout. The environment is convivial and subdued, not one of sensory overload. And for that, it's an even more appealing locale.

Let's get off the beaten path! Yes, there are some excellent spots on Front and the surrounding area to grab a brew, but you won't quite get the chill, satisfying experience that Terra Firma offers. The taproom was very nice, spacious, and clean. The waitress was funny and happy. The patio is where we chose to take our flights, and it was a great spot to get away from some of the crowds and clamor of downtown. If atmosphere doesn't matter to you, then just come just for the microbrews. All four of us were impressed. I definitely recommend Terra Firma before the crowds start spreading.
