Good food, not so good service. We eat at here quite frequently. Breakfast is consistenly good. Unforturnately the very young server yelled at one of my kids. She snapped at my three year old son for making a mess on the floor, while I was leaning over to pick up a few wrappers he had dropped. She forgot most of our drinks and never checked back after dropping the food off. The rest of the staff was great. Its just too bad, one bad employee has turned me off from returning again.

Great little diner with good basic breakfast food. Our bill was the cheapest of the breakfast places we chose all week and the food was delicious. We will be back.

Plain cooking craft. Good breakfasts, done simply. Went there because of what people reported about the burgers and I'm trying to find the best burger in TC. Good meat, hand prepared on a Kaiser roll. It was OK and a definite step up from gross fast-food stuff. What it was not - a great burger.

So far it is:
#1 Xylo - a great tasting burger made better by the toppings and a burgerworthy bun.
#2 J&S - a tasty step up from the chains. An ordinary diner burger with no frills.
#3 North Peak Brewery - an ambitious burger, well made except for the disappointing bun that can't hold it all together.

Enjoy J&S as a diner, that's all. Just don't go in expect a great burger.

J&S Hamburg is a great little diner that is reminiscent of a bygone era minus the clouds of cigarette smoke that once accompanied diner fare. Nothing fancy, but everything is done right. The breakfast is great...I prefer the Pine Street (two eggs, hash browns, bacon, and coffee). The pie by the slice is worth it even if it means you have to return to J&S for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. When we visit Traverse City we always make it a point to stop by J&S.
