This Traverse City institution never disappoints. When you enter Mode’s, you feel like you’re entering a time warp back to the era of tailfins on automobiles. Cocktails, red meat, Formica, red-tufted chairs, and mirrored beer signs on the wall all tell you that this is your father’s restaurant!
Although the place is always busy and a bit cramped, you can count on friendly and efficient service, expertly-cooked steaks, and fresh fish (grab some walleye before they run out).
My wife and I almost always have a great filet, while one of my friends routinely orders the duck. A reasonably-priced wine list (although not top end) assists the evening, along with generously-poured cocktails.
No reservations accepted, so go early or late, or you can anticipate a bit of a wait for your table.
Mode’s Bum Steer is a definite “must go” every time we are in Traverse City.
