“Lots to Do”
Reviewed August 4, 2007

My family stayed at Great Wolf Lodge in Traverse City as part of a business trip/vacation for my husband's company and were thrilled that most hotels were filled for the Governer's Convention and so were lodged here. The room was expansive including a privacy wall, balcony, and pull-out couch. It was sparkling clean and while not onger new, certainly not in need of renovation. The indoor waterpark was fun for a couple of hours on a cool July day. But the big surprise was Magic Quest, a magical scavenger hunt using wands that caused screens, chest, crystals to interact with the guests when you waved your wand. The basic experience costs $26 but it can fill up 1/2 to a day and more trying to fulfill 10 quests and 3 adventures. Most of the players were children and pre-teens but my 16 year old had a blast. It was like video game and puzzle but keeping the kids active going up and down stairs and down halls. The restaurant was fine and only slightly expensive. We wanted to try the spa but the cost was too high. The staff was very friendly and helpful from check-in to housekeeping to pool staff.
Highly recommended for famiies.

Stayed in a KidKamp for 4 nights with the Gamers package, which was a great deal from their website. Our 12 & 10 year olds LOVED the magiquest and played it a ton giving Mom & Dad some time to chill, and they loved seeing their names on the tv channel in the rooms. Highly recommend this if you have kids who love video games and with Gamers package, it was free! Check in at 5 pm went smooth, room looked great, couldn't find a luggage cart. Front desk said they are down the hallways on either side of the lobby. I looked, nada. Stalked a family in the parking lot and snagged one about 45 minutes later. HINT-they are all the way down the hallways in the stairwells leading outside. Front desk should be more explicit about where they are stored. Also, why aren't the front doors to this hotel automatic? You have to yank them open, hold them with your foot, shove your cart/luggage/whatever inside and then do the next door. Our kids are older but it was a huge struggle for families with young kids to handle as well. They really need to think about installing automatic doors, it's a kids hotel!
Waterpark was great, lifeguards are excellent. However, I personally witnessed many kids running across the lilly pad things. They should pad the sides of the pool there, and the kids should be made to not run on them. Rest of the waterpark was great, minigolf & the arcade were fun. Food is pretty good both in the waterpark and both restaurants, no more expensive than any other amusement park to us. Loved the smores for dessert. The mattresses on the bunk beds in the suites are about 3 inches thick and covered in plastic. The sheets they use don't cover them completely and they are hot, loud and uncomfy. HINT- ask for fitted sheets/top sheet and bring your kids sleeping bags to throw on top of the mattress, they will be happier. We had the loud elephants above us also, so we just turned the ac fan on and left it running to drown out any background noise and it worked fine. Overall, it was a great time and just a few things they may want to address to make it easier on the families that stay there. All of the hotel staff we encountered were very friendly and seemed happy to be there. The lobby is a great place to sit with a cup of coffee and check out things. Kids will be amazed and the bedtime storytime will enhant them. We were sorry our kids were too old for it, but my husband and I sat there while our kids played Magiquest and it was very sweet for the little ones. We will be back, my kids haven't stopped talking about the Magiquest game.

The waterpark, mini golf, magiquest, sleepy time snack, arcade and outdoor pool were great fun and really above and beyond what you would find in most hotels. The staff was friendly and helpful. My 7 year old had a wonderful time!!

However, this location fails to meet basic hotel needs. The room was not very clean, the pillows were lumpy and smelled of mildew. The blanket on the bed had holes and stains. The air conditioner blew right on the head of the bed. The elevators lack safety bumpers and close right on people trying to enter or exit and are hard to drive back open- I felt this was highly unsafe for little people. After the doors closed on my shoulders and it took me and my husband to get them to open, we took the stairs.

The restaurants had good food at a good price but the tables were sticky and tacky and so was the floor in some places.

To top off the whole experience, the hotel chose to move a rock climbing wall from inside the waterpark to the outdoor pool at one in the morning. Very loud and disturbing. The front desk thought that a bad nights sleep that was their fault was only worth a 50% discount on the hefty rate I was paying.

This hotel was worth 1/3 of the price I paid. I feel they missed the mark on basic hotel requirements of comfort and cleanliness here and would not stay again or recommend it to another. I would recommend visiting the hotel for the extras though- they were fun for all!!

Check in was quick and convenient. The room smelled very musty. One of the bathroom lights did not work so the bathroom was very dim. The mattress sheets did not fit the mattresses especially in the kids cabin room and the mattresses in the kids area were thin and hard. When the kids went to bed the mattress sheets came off and whenever they moved it sounded like a plastic bag rustling. We were on the first floor and the noise at night was terrible! The room above us sounded like it was inhabited by a herd of elephants and I had a really hard time sleeping. The next day when I was super tired we requested a new room and they happily gave us a new room on the 3rd floor because they said there probably would be less kids above us. The room was nicer and smelled less musty but at night the room above us again sounded like a herd of elephants. You can hear whats going on in the other rooms and if you have a baby who may cry, which we do, it will definetly bother the other guests early in the morning because the rooms are not sound proof in the least. The restaurant in the hotel was terrible. It took forever to get served and it was rather pricey. Would recommend going out to eat, ordering in, or just getting your own groceries from Meijer which is right next door. Anything you buy in the hotel is pricey. The buffalo next to the hotel were really cool to see in the morning though (they have a buffalo farm right next door) and the Grand Traverse Mall and many restaurants are on the same street as the hotel. I will not be going to Great Wolf Lodge Traverse City again because of my experience.

My husband and I took our kids to the GWL for a weekend getaway. It was wonderful. I was very pleased with the room (kids cabin) and the water park! The kids loved it and didn't want to leave. We are looking forward to coming back soon!

We took our 11-yr-old son to Great Wolf this week and it was wonderful!!! The staff and service are very "Disney-like" - very nice and helpful - we did not run into one staff member who wasn't happy to be there! Wonderful buffet breakfast at the lodge restaurant, very nice to be able to have access to the waterpark until 10 p.m. The new putt-putt golf course was a nice treat where we enjoyed ourselves. Check-in went perfectly and the room was ready at 1 p.m. when we arrived. It was a little noisy to try to get to sleep with the people above us but that's normal in any hotel setting. I would strongly recommend this to any family looking for a nice night away with the convenience of being able to enjoy water without the weather!

New to MI and tagged along with relatives to the Lodge. What a great place to bring children of all ages. A bit pricey but worth every dollar! The place offers so many different activities. The rooms were in excellent shape and very clean!!!
