“2% Local Assessmet”
Reviewed July 30, 2009

Don't be suprised when you get your final check-out Bill. A Local Assessment of 2% is added in addition to the State Sales Tax. One would think they would tell you this at the time of booking a reservation but they do not.

We were driving up to Mackinac Island from Chicago, and since there isn't really any beach access on the Island, I wanted to try to find something beachy as well as to break up the driving time. We arrived at Sugar Beach and were very pleasantly surprised. I originally reserved a courtview room, but when we arrived, I asked for a beach view/access and we got room 120. It was perfect, as the kids could go back and forth from the room and beach, my parents, who also traveled with us, could sit on the shaded patio area and enjoy the view. Me and my husband sat on the beach with our feet in the water! it was a nice way to relax after being in the car for 6 hours! The room we stayed in was beautiful and clean. It had a nice living area, with a pull out couch and tv. The bedroom had 2 true king sized beds with a TV and the bathroom was clean and there were plenty of towels. The room had a small fridge and microwave. The bathroom setup was nice as the toilet and tub were separted from the sinks, so more than one person could be in the bathroom area. The staff did a wonderful job keeping the beach area neat and clean. We were fortunate enough to be there midweek, so it felt like we had the place to ourselves.
There is also an indoor pool, but I'm not sure what kind of temperature they kept it at, but it felt like a giant sauna, which for me is not comfortable. The kids enjoyed swimming there, so as long as they were happy, so was I.
There was also a continental breakfast with ready made belgium sized waffles, plus cereals, fruit, milk, etc. Perfect for families.
Since we only stayed the one night, we didn't venture far into town. The hotel's location is perfect as there is a Ruby Tuesday and a Chinese restaurent across the street, as well as a Pirates' Cove mini golf. Just beware crossing the busy street!
Other that the busy crossing, my family loved this hotel and a happy family makes for a happy mom!

My husband and I stayed here one night to visit the wineries on Old Mission Peninsula. We planned on driving to Mackinaw Island the next day. We got there quite early, with no reservation and got a great "walk up" rate. They let us check in right away. The room was extremely clean (and I am quite picky) and very large. We couldn't get a waterfront room because they were booked. This room was so nice. It had a huge jacuzzi tub in the room. I loved the bathroom, it had a big shower and toilet and the sink w/mirror was outside the bathroom. I like this so I can get ready while my husband is showering. The bed was very comfortable also. The staff was so friendly also. The beach was beautiful also. We will stay here again for sure.

We have stayed here a couple of times a year. This time the housekeeping and general cleanliness of the room was lacking. Fold out couch had dirty sheets / blankets on it. Garbage laying around the room; also dusty / cobwebby like it hadn't been cleaned in a while. Even while we were there the room didn't get vacuumed the entire stay (2 nights). Disappointing, as we had a little bit of food in the room, so it was obvious. The pool is still nice; lots of families with kids. Room 220 is a suite with king bedroom but right next to the breakfast area; nice view but loud early in the morning.

We found the Sugar Beach to be a nice choice for visiting Traverse City.

The beach is fantastic and the hotel is clean.

Appx 1-2 miles from downtown shopping and close to the wine regions on the peninsulas.

Cons:

1) Noise level from hallway and other rooms running water are issues (Can wake you up if you are a light sleeper.)
2) Our bed was a little soft

This was a great place to stay for the the weekend. We enjoyed the early morning breakfast with great coffee. The hotel rooms were fairly large and clean. My only complaint is that the balcony could have used a good cleaning due to all the bugs that had found a place to die. Other than that the hotel staff was freindly and the grounds were well kept. A balcony on the bay was a beautiful way to see the sun rise & set. We will be back but you might want to request your balcony to be cleaned prior to your check in.
