You can smell that the room was not clean. They gave it a fast shuffle as far as cleaning goes. The sheets were awful. You know a good hotel by their sheets. Put your money into the sheets and maids that will clean a room well. I had to sleep with my sweats on and a beach towel we brought from home. Thank god I had my own pillow. Too bad because the decorating was very nice, all dusty but could be nice. I would never stay here again

Recently stayed here for a wedding held locally. Stayed in a suite which had a living room, kitchenette with mini-fridge. Bedroom was 2 king size beds. If you are going for beach time- try to stay on the first floor as you will be able to walk right out on the beach and it's VERY convenient. The rooms I would say are basic, but clean and comfortable. Flat screen tv's and DVD's in all. Bathrooms look like they have been recently renovated with new tiles, etc. Tubs are slightly outdated but a minor detail. Breakfast in the morning is very nice- hot and cold items. Exercise room basic but does the job with bike, elliptical and treadmill, general weight machine. There is a billiards room adjacent to pool, and an arcade room which would be great for kids. I appreciated that they always have coffee, fresh fruit in the lobby. A computer with internet, printer so I was able to print out my boarding passes for flight home. Close to mini-golf, restaurants, downtown area. Overall nice hotel with newer furnishings, but not a "high-class" resort that you will see at the casinos, etc. Would recommend for families especially. Boating and parasailing business is located next door. Definitely a great beach, clean, shallow swimming area and was groomed every morning.

Room Tip: If you plan to enjoy the beach- try to stay on the first floor for easy access and avoid noisy traffic from the road.

We spent the last weekend at the Sugar Beach Resort and the whole family was delighted. We are very frequent travelers and the kids for the first time in the past several months were crying when was the time to leave and asking to stay one more day. The location just on a very calm beach of shallow water looks like a paradise, especially for kids. The rooms are very spacious and perfectly clean.
I took one star off for two reasons:
1) There is no service on the beach. Whether you bring your stuff from home or you will need to rely on the vending machines for drink and then leave the beach to have a meal somewhere else. At least there are plenty of options for eating across the street but it would be just perfect if we could have any kind of service with drinks and snacks without having to leave the beach.
2) This one is where they actually lost 3/4 of the star. The check-in is at 3pm and the check-out is 11am. If you are planning a weekend getaway this is probably not for you as they are very strict with check-out time on Sunday. If you check-in after 3pm on a Saturday and need to leave by 11am on Sunday you will not take any advantage of the real benefit of being in such a wonderful place just on the beach. For the $149/night you can find better options for just sleeping.

Room Tip: If you give-up the beachfront view they have rooms with two queens and a pull-out sofa that can accomodate bigger families of up to 6 people very comfortably.

The front desk staff was very helpful and the room was clean. However, if they are going to advertise pillow top mattresses, they should buy sheets and mattress pads to fit. After one turn in the bed, you had so many bumps and piles, you didn't even know it was a pillow top. The pillows were flat and felt like they were ten years old and TV needs to be updated. For the amount of money they get for these rooms in the summer, I would expect the quality to be more on par with the beautiful views. The owners should try sleeping in one of their beds, I bet things would change in a hurry. Because of the poor sleeping conditions, I wouldn't recommend this hotel until they get new bedding.

Felt very ho-hum about this hotel.
Best features:
1) the view, if you are in a room that faces the lake,
2) the price, if you're staying off season, and
3) the staff is friendly and helpful.

And the bad stuff:
1) While the room was clean, it had a very musty smell (probably from guests going from the room to the water and back as it was a 1st floor room with beach access),
2) the bed had lousy pillows and the worst waterproof mattress cover that made the bed hot and very uncomfortable (According to the front desk all the mattress pads are identical.) I have young kids and the waterproof mattress technology has greatly improved and way more comfortable than what Sugar Beach offered.
3) The room was hot and its air conditioning was poorly inadequate, and finally...
4) No closet - but there was a wardrobe, however it was very musty and made my clothes stink - I ended up hanging my clothes on the outside of wardrobe to avoid it.

Meh...
