We go to Traverse City every March and every March we seem to eat at the same restaurants! This year I was determined to find different choices-so a little research brought us to Scalawags! The decor is great - its hard to stop looking around! The owner was delightful and very welcoming and made a great suggestion of the whitefish and shrimp, which was delicious! My husband decided on white fish and perch but was really tempted by the walleye! Food was fast, hot and really good - and the bonus of a piece of walleye was a treat! Fries were ok, I loved the slaw, I'm not a hushpuppy fan so I have no opinion on them! Overall - a great choice! We will be back next year!

Traverse City is a foodie town - there are so many restaurants, it's a challenge to decide where to go! Tonight we visited Scalawags for the first time.

It's a fun, quirky place decorated with vintage outboard motors, bait-bucket lamps, fish bobber salt & pepper shakers, old oars and fishing poles... It was interesting to just sit and look.

You walk up and order at the counter, then the food is delivered to your table. The service was fast and efficient. Clearly, local fish is the specialty: whitefish, perch, walleye. We ordered the walleye meal, which comes with fries, coleslaw and hush puppies.

After reading the other reviews, I am sad to admit that we are in the minority. We just didn't enjoy our fish nearly as much as the other reviewers. The walleye dinners are $15 each. Yes, it was hot and fresh, but seemed completely tasteless. The two hush puppies were the size of grapes. And the french fries and coleslaw were utterly forgettable.

Our meals, with drink and tip, was over $35. Pretty expensive for a meal we didn't enjoy. Because of the fun atmosphere and the other good reviews, maybe we will give it another chance. But...there are a lot of other restaurants to try before then.

Very cool atmosphere, great food and reasonable prices. The location is terrible and easy to forget about, but I'm always happy when I remember to go. Prepare for a fried food feast.

The food here is very good, and the fish is fresh and local. It looks like a little fish and chips chain when you walk in, but the food is always piping hot and really delicious. 2 pc. whitefish, hush puppies, fries, and coleslaw all for under $10. The staff always checks on you and is very attentive. You will be very happy with your meal here.

We had to have fish and chips and gave this location a try for dinner. The whitefish dinners with hush puppies portions were a little small but very good. The coupons which are readily available on-line were accepted and helped make the prices more in line with what you receive. The decor is way over the top with the nautical theme and is very family friendly. I would recommend giving this place a try when you have a taste for fish and chips.
