Decided to try a ballgame since my grandson came too visit from back East. Wow, one game and I was hooked. I love this place. Very family oriented, lots of fun, entertaining, even for us old folk. The foods a little pricey, and you can't bring in nothing from the outside to eat, but it's well worth the visit. Recommend this to anyone.

We saw it from Route 31 as we approached Traverse City. What could it be? A miniature Churchill Downs painted grey? We decided it must be Wuerfel Park, and with tickets already reserved for a game that evening, we felt excited at the prospect of such an appealing looking place to see our first Independent League baseball game with the Traverse City Beach Bums vs. the Lake Erie Crushers. In the end, we had a terrific night at the ball field, even with a rain-out, and would do it again.
We purchased tickets for a Friday night game via telephone, in order to choose a seating arrangement to accommodate my husband's recent knee replacement needs, and received our tickets by Will-Call at the box office at the field. The staff member who worked with him offered a variety of seating options, and placed us on the first base line, right behind the visitors' dugout.
Upon arrival at the field, we enjoyed the easy access of the parking area $4 fee) and short walk to the stadium entrance. College students appear to staff the stadium for games, and greeted us cordially while checking the bags we brought with us.
Our first line of business was to find dinner. Hungry pre-teen and teen children require constant feeding, and the prices at the park fell into the moderate to high category, based on quantity and quality of product. The best deals came in the form of Blue Bunny ice cream products, which prompts our suggestion of having dinner prior to attending a game at the park, but for a night out with the family, the cost will not break the bank.
We made our way to our seats behind the visiting team's dugout, and felt energized by the pipe-in music, loud enough to permeate the forming groups of fans and make the atmosphere light and expectant. Country music does not interest most of my family, but the playlist didn't distract any of us negatively, and even prompted me to use my Smart Phone to identify some of the music.
We had the pleasure of sitting beside the holding area for on-field entertainment, and had a front-row seat for giveaways that took flight across the stadium seats from mascot duo Suntan and Sunburn. They interacted with fans, had many fans of their own, as ballpark mascots do, and played their parts to the delight of our kids, and us!
Rain after the 6th inning brought the gathered crowd under the overhangs on the concession concourse, with plenty of space to stroll, find some snacks, and try to outlast the storm. Staff and mascots interacted with fans, the music kept cranking, and everyone continued having a good time while waiting for the game to restart.
As it turns out, the officials called the game, Beach Bums in the lead, and we thoroughly enjoyed our night at the ballpark. We will definitely do it again.

The Bums are great. Every inning break there is some kind of entertaining promotion. great spirit and fun. Easy to get the best seats you'll ever have for a ball game. Super family friendly and clean park.

Strange way to list a baseball team ( by its park). I wouldn't go to Wuerfel Park for a picnic or rally. but anyway, back to the Beach Bums, This is a great way to spend a few hours. Tickets cost $12 ( for regular seats, $5 for lawn space) and parking (plenty of it and CLOSE to the stadium) is $2. The Traverse City Beach Bums are in the independent Frontier league. For those from Chicago, this is the same league as the Windy City Thunderbolt and the Shaumberg Boomers. The game has the usual Bush league activities between innings, Tossing T shirts, or kids racing the mascot. The park is new, immaculate and comfy. Bathrooms are good, food options are limited (technically, you are prohibited from bringing your own food into the park). We chose a 5:00 PM game which was perfect, It was til light when the game was over. When I am UP North, I would definitely go again.

Catching a game at Wuerfel Park is a classic minor-league baseball experience. And I mean that in a good way. There's not a bad seat in the house. There are the typical giveaways and mascot interactions. Prices are a lot less than they are in the big leagues.

The food is nothing remarkable, but the recent addition of some Michigan craft brews to the drink options helps overcome the otherwise stereotypical ballpark fare.

Heck, you can even sit on the lawn beyond the home run fences and make a picnic out of the evening. Plus, if you go on Friday nights, the fireworks are an added bonus.

So what's not to like? Sure, it would be great if there were, say, views of the water from the ballpark. Or maybe if it were closer to town you could walk from your house or hotel room. It'd be nice if the scoreboard (or the announcer) told us baseball geeks if that was ruled a passed ball or wild pitch. But those are gripes, not objections.

You're out to watch a ball game. And this is a very nice place to do that.
