Owner description: Old state asylum that is being renovated into shops, restaurants, wineries, and more...lots to look at, including tons of trails to walk, bike, ski, etc.

One of the original buildings of the Traverse City State Hospital (often locally called the insane asylum) has been preserved and now houses the Village at Grand Traverse. Inside, there are artifacts and stories from the State Hospital days along with locally owned shops, wineries, restaurants and galleries. It is a unique experience and a fun place to just wander around in!

The Village at Grand Traverse Commons is one of my favorite stops in Traverse City. Located within the historic state hospital buildings and grounds, there is much to do, see, drink and eat! There are restaurants, coffee shops, tasting rooms, galleries and a multitude of shops to explore. The buildings themselves are historically significant within the community and one can spend hours wandering the halls and grounds. A true gem and not to be missed when in the area.
