“Roughing It in Cabin #6”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 21, 2014

We ended up in northern MI because our daughter went to Interlochen Center for the Arts Camp. After dropping her off we stayed in northern MI to spend the week. Wanted to try a real up north cabin and found Harolds at Spider Lake. We picked cabin #6. It's small, cute, clean, and unique. Generally staying in nice resorts this was a real 'adventure' because it's rustic. I liked the place. The grounds, the beach, the row boat we were allowed to use, the picnic table and weber cooker, all of it. (And I'm a city girl). The cabin had the occasional ant or two but that was the extent of it. We walked through other cabins that were larger and more rustic. I liked ours better because it was painted bright colors inside and had a happy vibe. The others were traditional camp/bunk houses and were full of dark wood. Now, this entire place is old - built in the 1940s and some would think the cabins need work, but it is unique and fun for a few days. Look at it as camping rather than a 'resort'. The owners were on site and very helpful, nice and friendly. I suppose they have their hands full with maintance and upkeep because this is a large property with lots of old buildings, sheds, shelters, etc. Finally, I must mention price. I do not know what the larger cabins go for a night but our little cabin #6 was a measly $75 USD a night! What a bargin for an adventure! In our case #6 was a very good value. (Again, I don't know about regular cabins that were larger and more 'rustic').

Room Tip: Look at the room as a camping adventure not a 'resort'.

Wow are the owners wonderful. They are so helpful and nice. And I agree, if you want a generic hotel, get a hotel. But if you want a family vacation in the real Michigan--most beautiful place on earth--go to Harold's!!! Water, water, water. Kids and family. I cannot speak highly enough about how nice they are.

What a Wonderful Family - One that wants to slow life down a bit and spend some quality time together - just doing the good ole fashion - at the lake family fun - fishing, swimming and jumping off the Swim Raft , smores and scary stories around bon fires, Making summer friends that you look forward to seeing year after year "at the lake'. You don't need A/C, a microwave or TV - all you needs is some sand, water, some minnows and a Cozy Log Cabin with comfy beds !

I scheduled our stay here as a surprise anniversary trip with my wife. I originally wanted to book one of the cabins with the hot tubs, but due to the relative closeness of our anniversary to Valentine's Day that was not possible with the short notice planning I am famous for. I was able to get the small cabin #6, or the "Love Shack" as it is refered to by the property owners.

As the weekend neared, I must admit I had my doubts as to what we were about to get into. The pictures I had seen online made it appear very small and knowing that neither my wife or I are small people by any sort, I was worried about having room to move without constantly running into each other.

When we arrived, I had to double check the property map that I had loaded onto my phone. Our cabin looked more like the size of a tool shed (especially in comparison to the size of the other cabins). As we entered, we were pleasantly surprised as to just how comfy our weekend home would be.

The place was furnished with all of the necessities of cabin life. The kitchen with equipped with a small stove and a full-sized refrigerator. The bathroom had a toilet and a shower stall with wonderfully HOT water. The full-size bed was made with flannel sheets and there was a small table just big enough to play cards at (or surf the web if that is your kind of thing, since they did offer free WiFi). The cabin was heated by a gas log fireplace that was operated from a thermostat so that you could keep it at whatever temperature makes you comfortable.

During our stay, we made a few trips to town for various reasons. The drive to town was a very peaceful trip, especially in the winter weather, and only took about 15 minutes. There were many wonderful restaurants, which made for very difficult decisions when it was time to eat. We also visited a few wineries and made a couple trips to the casino.

Overall, it was probably one of the best weekend trips we have had in quite some time (and not just because it was kid-free). We cant wait to go back again.

When we arrived here on the property 24 years ago, the regulars had nicked names this SMALL Studio #6 Cabin - "The Honeymoon Cabin" because they said that's really all there is room to do in there... "honeymoon' !! Now we call it The Love Shack- It's Cute, Its Adorable, it's SMALL - like a bedroom with a little kitchen and bathroom. We couldn't make it any bigger -so we just tried to make it functional and CUTE ! Come on up and try it sometime... Kathy

We loved it! Like many reviewers before me have said, this is not a "resort". However, it is a wonderful retreat into the woods. The cabin is simple yet cozy, with charming touches. We were looking for snow-filled weekend, away from our computers & TV's. After skiing and snowshoeing all day, the toasty-warm fireplace welcomed us "home". This was the perfect place to relax, eat a square meal, take a hot shower, get a good nights rest and head out for another day of fun in the snow. Our hosts had the cabin ready for us upon arrival and provided useful maps & brochures for us to familiarize ourselves with the area. We would go back, no question.

This cabin is absolutely incredible. My finace' and I were able to make it for a few days during the week and it was so nice and quiet throughout the site as well is in the downtown area. The cabins themselves are very quaint, clean, and welcoming. The fireplace was perfect for keeping the cabin warm at night and the hot tub was a fantastic bonus! Wonderful, private area with a fantastic view and very affordable!

Room Tip: Only two of the cabins have a hot tub so make sure you specify if you want one! =)

Cabin # 4 is a Log Cabin, a real log cabin, in the woods, on the lake, off the highway at the end of the road, built in the late 1940's it has a rustic "retro" feel - for an up north, away from it all vacation. Quiet, private and secluded feeling with easy access to Traverse City and all that is has to offer. Cabins # 4 and # 5 have their own private hot tub on the screened in porch overlooking the lake - Fall, Winter and Spring only. Yea !

We love staying at Harold's for our family summer vacation! It is so wonderful to have a place to disconnect from the everyday grind and reconnect as a family. The cabin we stay in (3) is so quaint and has a wonderful private lake access down the stair path. We can sit for hours watching the boats, listening to the loons, and enjoying Mother Nature at her best! Hilton or Marriott it's not. Harold's is the simple life and is a perfect place for those who seek it! Thank you Kathy and Rolf!!!!

Cabin # 3 is located on the point of our sandy peninsula - with a view of the lake from every window. Built in the late 1940's, its a real log cabin circa 1950 - no microwave, no A/C, no TV. Be ready for some good clean ole fashioned fun, bring the board and card games, the fishing poles and the inflatable beach toys. Hang out on the beach, fish, swim, have a bon fire and roast some marshmellows - bonus hours of sun light in the summer - early summer it doesn't get dark until after 10 pm. Get your family away from the TV and enjoy some fresh Northern Michigan air !

We will not visit this place again. Kathy was nice and communication was great, but our kids were eaten alive by the bugs INSIDE.

Upkeep on the cabins is poor. This bunch of cabins could be a gold mine if kept up. Bring all you need to cook, clean and sleep on. The bathrooms are truly gross with the water heater inches from the toilet and uncovered.

My teenage children could not believe the lack of cleanliness. On a positive, Kathy communicated well and is a nice person, but these cabins are not worth the $$.
