Owner description: Left Foot Charley is a winery like no other. In lieu of the single estate model, LFC is a collection of grape and apple growers located throughout Northern Michigan dedicated to growing fruit for our wine and cider. Located in the urban setting of the former Traverse City State Hospital campus known as The Village, LFC creates an array of balanced white wine, red wine, and hard cider. Every bottle tells the story of the farm, the vintage and the winemaker's dream of sharing it all with you.

The winery is in the middle of the Grand Traverse Commons which gives it an interesting setting, but the wines were just average. The staff was hit or miss as to their interest in the customers.

A fun place, a limited selection of wines. Interesting history. If you can find the place. With a GPS in my car, and another in my hand, we couldn't find it. Had to call and have them direct us as we drove. Wine good tho!

This winery is a great place to pop into for a tasting or a glass.. it is located in the village among a lot of other neat places.. the wine tasting allows you to find your favorite and since my hubby is not a wine drinker..he swears by the spiced hard apple cider!

The history of this location was interesting. The lower part of the bar is made from doors from patient rooms at the mental hospital. Small and cozy and the wine is great. Excellent staff

First, I love the location of this winery/tasting room, which is part of the old State Mental Asylum that has been restored and converted into shops, restaurants, and other businesses. The winery is very modern looking in comparison to others in the area. It has a very "hometown bar" feel to the tasting area, which is relaxing and fun. The tasting is generous and the staff is very knowledgable.

During our tasting the head wine maker came in to bring us a new grape to sample. Can't remember the name of it, but it's something he is testing for this year's press. I like that they are always trying something different. It's SO needed in the Traverse area. Because of this nod toward continually trying new things, they actually made a red wine that tastes like good red wine (a rarity in that area). It's good.

Their cider is really good too. They have three varieties on tap. In addition to tasting and sales, they also offer nice food and an outside area that is really pleasant.

So, you give up the views of wine grapes and the shoreline, but I think the great taste of this wine and the care the winemaker obviously shows to the craft of winemaking, more than makes up for it.
