“Group vacation in condo's with golf (not the hotel)”
Reviewed August 23, 2011

I have been going to Crystal Mtn. resort every August for the past 8 years with a group of between 12-18 women. This was the group's 15th year......I just joined it 8 years ago! We stay in a condo on the property. Our arrangements are made a year in advance along with tee times for five days. The vacation planners at Crystal have been so helpful in making our stay as perfect as possible. The cleaning staff is wonderful in meeting our everyday needs.......and believe me, that many women can create a lot of trash each day! On our 10th anniversary, we were met at the #1 tee of the Betsie Valley course by the resort manager, trailed by several waiters carrying flutes of champagne to celebrate our milestone! That was quite a surprise! This year, our 15th, we were also given a token of the resort's appreciation for our business.

While everything is not always perfect, the occasional problems we might have are taken care of immediately! For example, this year, when we got there on Wednesday, for some reason, they did not have us on their reservation list (even though we had printed confirmation). They expedited the cleaning staff to get our condo in move in shape right away, and we were later given a full refund for that first day! That's above and beyond!! Unfortunately, there were a few things in our condo that were broken (nothing that impeded our ability to stay there comfortably) and we learned that the group who had just stayed there were responsible for the damage. Such a shame.

The golf course staff always has our golf clubs on our carts, and cleans them after each round and stores them for us until the next day. The rangers are very friendly, and have interesting stories to tell!

We have enjoyed the alpine slide, the pool, and the chairlift to the top of the mountain to watch the sunset while tasting wine.

We would definitely recommend anyone to go to Crystal Mtn. Resort!

Beautiful resort, wonderful for family. Enjoyed the ice cream hut in the evenings and bike riding, alpine slide, pool and walks during the day.

We just got back from 2 nights at Crystal Mountain, 2 adults and a 5 year old. Having just been to Boyne Mountain in July, I was anticipating being disappointed, but I sincerely think this was an even better experience surprisingly. We stayed in a 3rd floor Hamlet room; no elevator, which we knew going into it. The room was quite large. The view was alright; it looked onto the ski runs, which was a bit boring because its the summer. The outdoor pool for kids was great; its really geared toward the 10 and under crowd. The lifeguards were very attentive. The Alpine slide was a MAJOR hit with our son. The climbing wall was too. The pizza was a bit overpriced. The 'sub' sandwiches were very large and well worth the money. The ice cream choices were limited, only 7, but huge portions for the money. I used the fitness center and was very happy with the choices of the equipment and the maintenance of them. I also took a very nice yoga class for no extra charge. The indoor pool was clean too. We'll definitely be back. And Military families: ask for a military discount if you are eligible; they don't advertise one, but will give you 10% off if you ask.

We had a very nice stay at Crystal Mountain. Our suite in Wintergreen looked to be completely remodeled. All my fears about staying in an “older” section of the resort were forgotten as soon as we walked through the door.

There are many things to do here. My kids loved the outdoor pool, although it is much smaller than the resort’s promotional photographs would suggest. There’s a climbing wall, ski lift rides, an alpine slide back down the mountain, an art walk through the woods (my kids hate, hate, hated this), bike rentals, and more.

Plus, Crystal Mountain’s location in Thompsonville makes trips to Lake Michigan or Traverse City an easy 30-minute drive.

Our only complaint was with the way local day-care and summer-camp programs bus in kids to visit the resort. Don’t get me wrong: I love kids, and have two of my own, but a sudden influx of 30 random children into the pool can be a bit unsettling. This instantaneous overcrowding forced us to prematurely leave the pool area on two different occasions.

All in all, we had a great time, and would certainly come back.

We stayed in the Pinewood area of the resort, which I expected to be like a standard hotel building, but it was more like little condos than a hotel room. The rooms were very quaint with rustic decor. Our room was a queen with a spa tub. It's located on the golf course. It had a little kitchenette and a spa tub w/ separate shower. It had a very small deck with a couple of chairs. The room was very nice except the most important part, the bed, was quite squishy. I was very pooped from all the days activity, so I still slept just fine!

We ate dinner at the Thistle Pub and Grille. The food was very good although the wait staff could have been better, we felt rushed, they never cleared anything off the table, and they plopped things down so hard that they spilled. We ate outside which was very pleasant. We had breakfast at the Wild Tomato- it was AWESOME! I think the best bang for your buck is the buffett. It was plentiful, fresh, and lots of variety. There are many options for food right at the resort.

We also took advantage of the free fitness classes and took a water aerobics class! Lots of fun, and we didn't have to pay extra. They have something going on everyday.

We also hung out by the outside pool, which is a bit divided into kid play area, whirlpool, and larger lap type pool. There is lots of seating and extra towels as well as a locker room with showers. There is also a snack bar right there with everything from cocktails for you to ice cream cones for the kiddies.

We also did the alpine slide!!! So much fun! A little pricey, but you have to do it!

We also did the Michigan Legacy Art Walk which is on the resort property. It's free to guests and totally worth it. An awesome hike with enchanting art every step of the way.

Ironically enough, golf, the main thing to do there in the summer isn't our thing, so I can't comment except to say that it looked like people were enjoyed themselves and the grounds looked lovely.

By the way, the landscaping there is amazing! Everywhere you look, so gorgeous!

The resort looks like a small new england town.
Loads of things to do in the summer and winter.
Close to Lake Michigan. Canoing and kyaking are also avaiable.
The suite we stayed in was lovely and the bed was very comfortable.
There are several restraunts to choose from.
Breakfast at the wild tomato was just the best.

Room Tip: you can rent a house or stay in a hotel atmospher, all are very nice

Our cottage had ample room for privacy when needed, and a nice gathering space as well. The long window seat (which could fit at least two) was a favorite for reading. We scheduled kayaking and tubing trips from the activity center; included transportation was convenient. We also made good use of the free check-out of board games. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is a short drive away and quite spectacular!

Room Tip: The Cottages at Water's Edge were centrally located and a short walk to dining, the pool, etc.
