I’ve liked the wines from this award-winning Northern Michigan wine producer for several years. I usually get to visit about twice a year. I have always recognized the Leelanau facility was more active and closer to the production, as well as friendlier and more knowledgeable about their wines. I visited Black Star’s tasting room at the south of Traverse City’s Old Mission Peninsula this week (weekday) and experienced an amazingly rude reception from the attendant at the otherwise classy round tasting counter. “Surly” comes to mind: maybe it was a caricature of rude and our response was being monitored. While concurrently working through the suggested Red and White flights, we asked him to reiterate which of their vintages was currently in the white glass: “It’s whatever she asked for.” followed by his walking away.
As the only two tasters in the room, we left without bothering to sample the last round.
If Black Star is on your wine tour list this autumn, I recommend you visit their more welcoming Sutton’s Bay facility.

I do love this winery, and it is my favorite in Traverse City. However, there are some irritating aspects to it.

PROS:

- Get the Late Harvest Riesling. Don't even question it. Just get it. You don't even have to taste it. Just get it. It's the best wine that they have, second to their cherry wines.
- Beautiful setting. It's just so pretty, especially in the wintertime. If you can visit here when the snow has just fallen, it is worth it.
- They sell their wines (especially the Late Harvest Riesling) in many stores (like Meijer) around Michigan, so you might just want to pick up a bottle locally if you don't have a goal of making a trip to this location in Michigan.

CONS:

- Overpriced, especially the charge for tastings. They need to bring the tasting charge down to $3.
- You can get a better deal for buying in quantity, but I rarely need a 12-pack of wine from any one location (there was a winery in Pennsylvania that was my one exception to the rule).
- They need more of a cheese/food selection in general that will compliment the wines. They could make money off of additional food sales (especially with the quantity of people that come through here), but they just aren't taking advantage of it.

We visited the Black Star Farms on Mission Point and had a great time. The staff was real friendly and the atmosphere was quaint. They also provided sparkling grape juice and crackers for the kids. If you bring back your glasses from previous visits, they waive the tasting fee.

Black Star Farms is one of the two or three wineries worth stopping at in the area. Their wine is a little more complex than some of the other wineries in the area. Driving into the farm and vineyard area leaves a good first impression. Once you get back to the tasting room, you are welcomed by some of their knowledgeable staff. It could be organized a little better for tastings but I've typically had a good time discussing the wine with the staff. One neat thing about Black Star is that if you bring your tasting glass back on future visits, you don't have to pay for the tasting each time going forward. It is my second favorite winery in the Traverse area, behind 45 North.
