“Jeri is the best”
Reviewed July 17, 2013

Went to a wedding in Grand Haven and stayed here on a Saturday night. It was very busy when we arrived and Jeri at the front desk wasn't sure when we would have a room. We told her the wedding started at 4 PM and she said she would call us as soon as she had a room. Very helpful. Enjoyed the tikibar while we waited, including a free drink - coupon drawn from the bucket at checkin. Bar tender suggested a picture at the tiki carving - a highlight of the trip. Enjoyed brunch there on Sunday outside - fun to watch the boats and water action.

Spent several days around the July 4th holiday here. This Holiday Inn is clean, refreshed, well cared for. The pool areas are fine, the lawn commons area near the river is very nice as is the Tiki Bar. The rooms and bathrooms are clean and most of the hotel seems like it has been renovated nicely. Location is very good as this sits just over the drawbridge between Spring Lake and Grand Haven putting you a mere three minutes from downtown Grand Haven. The staff was quite nice and very professional, offering us tips on things to do in the area and so on, with Shaye being quite special at the front counter. We returned late one evening from being out in the area, and were quite hungry but the Jack's Waterfront Bar at the hotel was no longer serving food. A very pleasant surprise as the bartender proceeded to find us some nachos and salsa to have with our wine! All that said, and this Holiday Inn being quite nice at this river location, there is one issue that keeps them from getting a five star rating from us...and that is the fact that due to this location on the Grand River, and the amount of locals who pop in from their boats, or just from the area, we found it very difficult to enjoy the nice Tiki Bar outside, and even the pool area was not secured for hotel guests. It really is annoying to pay $300 a night and watch locals pop in to use the pool or sit in the Tiki Bar chairs for hours on end. I understand that they need the business and the locals bring business, but if you want to cater to locals then LOWER your price to out of town visitors who will be limited in the use of the facilities. We watched locals come in and change into swim suits in the bathrooms, or hop off boats and tie up the Tiki Bar on beautiful days that we had booked to enjoy this place. I'm not simply referring to the excellent lawn party on the 4th of July (with live band, food and activities - all enjoyed by locals understandably), but to several days of our stay wherein the aforementioned problem with using facilities that are over-run by locals who don't "pay to stay" is incredibly annoying to us as paying hotel guests.

Room Tip: Book a room on the river side, 3rd or 4th floor if possible. Quiet with nice view of the river and...

The hotel staff (front desk was very rude} My wife was booked short term while home modifications were being complete to her home due to a recent auto accident. My issuance set up billing properly and have been very helpful during our transition unfortunately the hotel staff apparently were not properly trained nor did they have the materials needed to make necessary billing arrangements. On the bright side Jack's restaurant is very good but a little pricey, but the rooms are small and not cleaned unless instructed

Thank you for taking the time to provide a review.
Unfortunately, our front desk did make an error in billing however the mistake was corrected immediately when it was brought to our attention. We do our best to accommodate all of our guests and I apologize that you feel that your experience was less than satisfactory. We take pride in the respect and the caliber of service that all of our staff offers to our guests. I am happy to hear that your experience in Jack’s restaurant was very good and will pass along the kind words to our restaurant manager.

The hotel has well maintained common areas. There is an outdoor restaurant and bar located between the pool and river. Very pleasant place to sit and dine. Room was fine and the bathroom very nice.

Our only problem was the inability to connect to the wireless network. Even calling the wireless company and spending 45 minutes on the phone were not enough to even connect. Business center computers also ran extremely slow! If being connected to the internet is vital, you would be very unhappy.

My wife and two year old daughter stayed here as a "half way stop" on our way to Traverse City. We were surprised in the lack of hotel options in the Grand Haven area, so we went with the Holiday Inn and upgraded to a river side room. We were disappointed in just about everything.

The location is just outside of Grand Haven and is an easy drive to the downtown / beach / lighthouse area, which is nice. There is a large deck / restaurant / bar on the water attached to the hotel which is convenient.

When we checked in, we were identified as "reward members" which meant we got a gift at check in. The gift was to pull a small strip of paper from a cup and redeem the prize. Mine was a small bottle of water? But nothing for my wife since only one of us could "draw". Really? after a 5 hour drive, they couldn't just offer an extra bottle of water? The whole prize thing came off as gimmicky and cheap. Not what a high class establishment would do.

The room was the main problem. Although clean and okay on space, the humidity hit us right in the face. Everything in the room felt damp and wet (including sheets). So I turned the AC down to try and fix the problem. That only made the room ice cold and humid. The fan would kick on and off through the night. That meant we were either hot and clammy or freezing and clammy. It was a very uncomfortable night. We would have called the desk if we were staying another night.

We were also located facing the pool. The pool is okay, pretty basic. The noise from the live music at the bar was disruptive, especially when we have a two year old who sleeps earlier. But we can live with that, and we don't expect complete silence. It was just another aggravation.

As we were leaving, someone was vacuuming the elevator and made us wait until he cleaned out the inside of elevator. That was annoying since, I believe customers at a hotel should come first. The cleaning could have waited a moment. As we made our final check out and walk through the lobby, no one asked how our stay was or even thanked us for staying. We left very disappointed.

The final issue is price. We paid the same price for this uncomfortable room that a 4 star downtown Chicago hotel would cost, but we certainly did not get the same level of service or accommodations. On the way back on this same trip, we stayed a JW Marriott in Grand Rapids (close by city). For an upgraded, elegant, extremely comfortable room, we paid $50.00 LESS then at this Holiday Inn. That that was a solid 4 - 5 star hotel. The two can not be compared, so why the high price??

For Grand Haven being such a wonderful town and beach, I am surprised that this is one of the best (and only) hotel options. We will not be returning and do not recommend anyone to stay here.

Room Tip: Avoid pool side and upper floors due to humidity and heat.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review regarding your recent stay. It is our goal to consistently provide superior service and accommodations and your feedback is very important to us.

As an IHG Rewards Member, we greatly appreciate your business and loyalty to the brand. It is up to each hotel as to what they would like to offer as a perk to our members upon check in. In the past, we have not received any complaints about our member perks program; however we have taken your suggestions into consideration and are looking into revamping what we offer.
I am very sorry that your AC unit was not functioning properly in your room and we would have been more than happy to fix the problem immediately so that you were comfortable during your stay. Maintenance has been informed of this issue and is looking into the unit to make sure this is not a problem for that room in the future.

I will be sure to speak with my Front Desk staff and remind them to inquire about how a guest’s stay was when they do encounter them in the lobby area. We strive to provide world class service to everyone who is on our property.

In regards to our rate, our property is priced higher in the summer due to our location to Grand Haven and the beach as well as with the amenities we offer such as the indoor/outdoor pool, outdoor dining area and our Tiki Bar.

I appreciate you taking the time to inform us on your stay and please feel free to contact me directly if you have any other questions or concerns.

We stayed overnight on a long road trip. Despite the late night check-in, the service was excellent and courteous. The location is near the highway with excellent parking. There are several nearby exits from US 31 with plenty of restaurants.

Rooms were clean and the overall atmosphere of the hallways and reception area were pleasant. My family was happy, and that's what counts for hotels on a road trip.

I was pleasantly surprised by this Holiday Inn. The room was modern, clean, and comfortable, and the hotel sits on the water. Sunset views were quite beautiful. If I travel back to Spring Lake, I will definitely stay here again.
