The Westin Southfield Detroit
Ranked #4 of 20 Hotels in Southfield
Reviewed November 28, 2007

I stay at this hotel very frequent for business, I have stayed in 10+ different rooms here. The location is extremely convenient. The Westin is within the Southfield Towncenter complex and connected to all the towers, it takes me only 5 minutes to get to where I need to be.

Most of the staff is very friendly, but usually not very helpful when it comes down to it. They like to say hi and chat with you, but when you ask them to actually do something, everything changes. House keeping is especially disappointing. I have came back to my room to find it not made up at all. And then it took almost 2 hours to get someone to clean it! After the staff "cleaned" it, I had no toiletries, no towels, no coffee...... they were aware of the problem, but brought back each item one at a time, and this whole ordeal lasted way longer than it needed to. There is often hair or soap still on the counter or floor, even at check-in! Sometimes they will forget to clean out the coffee maker or give you more water bottles (platinum guests get free water). Sometimes they won't put more toiletries in the room. Almost every single day, they forget do clean a part of my room!

The hotel appears to be like any other Westin hotels at first glance, but when I looked closer, I noticed that many things are broken in the rooms. The carpets are stained in many of the rooms. The desks are often chipped. Many of the dual shower heads don't work properly, they are difficult to adjust, and I've had several rooms where only 1 of the shower head worked. The rooms get extremely hot especially in the winter, after inquiring with the staff, they said that they turned off the AC for the entire hotel. So the only air that comes out of the vents is hot air! No matter how you adjust the thermostat in the room, if it is already hot in the room, its impossible to get any cold air to balance it out. But I did realize that there a small part of the window opens in every room! Just open it, and let the cool fresh air come in!! :) The "newly renovated" rooms have these modern lamps. But the outlets on these lamps are impossible to use! The lamp on the desk has this bar right over the outlet, I couldn't even plug my laptop into it. The lamp by the bed has some kind of bubble looking design, and its impossible to plug in a larger plug such as those that come with cell phones. The chairs also are not ergonomic at all, and very bad for your back/shoulders if you need to work in the room.

I will continue to stay here for its great location for my work (and lack of alternative in Southfield!), but would not ever pay for this hotel out of my own pocket. Its just not worth what they charge.

We were able to book this hotel for $75 a night on Priceline which was a fantastic deal. We got a nice, very clean room with what looked like all new furniture and bedding. The design of the room was fantastic - beautiful lamps/curtains/bedding. Bathroom was spacious and well lit and the double shower head was a nice extra. A large makeup mirror, full power hairdryer (not one of those dinky ones) and bathrobe was provided. Room had a pleasant odor - I think they're pumping slightly scented air into the Westin's these days. My only complaint was that the bed was too comfy and it made waking up a little more difficult than usual.

Housekeeping was very pleasant and so was the concierge.

This hotel offers free covered parking and also makes it really easy to access the hotel from the parking deck. They also offered valet, but the self parking seemed just as convenient and the valet parking didn't seem to be covered.

The hotel was very centrally located to downtown Detroit and its surrounding suburbs. It was only a couple of miles away from Franklin which has a wonderful cider house where you can go and get fresh hot cider and apple donuts during the apple picking season. There were also a lot of small eateries surrounding the hotel that you could easily walk to if you didn't have a car.

Over-all a very nice stay.

First of all, let me say that typically the reviewers on trip advisor are right on and the Westin in Southfield was no exception. So thanks to everybody who takes the time to add reviews and make this a valuable travel research tool!

I stayed for one night and was certainly ready to leave. I paid $69 through hotwire which is the most anybody should pay to stay here. This is definitely not a 4 star hotel. 3 stars might even be pushing things. Overall the hotel is nice looking (from a distance) as long as you don't look too closely at the details. The carpeting was stained, hallways were dark and dingy. The elevator looked pretty beat up. There were hairs on the floor in the bathroom. While every staff member will say hello to you every time you walk by (bordering on annoying), the service stops there. In the restaurant they messed up our order and what we hoped would be a quick bite to eat took over 90 minutes. The whole 3rd floor seemed to be under construction which is a shame because we could not access the pool or gym. Our room was not ready at 3PM as promised, nor even 5PM. When we tried to call the front desk later in the evening all we got was a busy signal. There was no newspaper in the morning and no breakfast room service between 7:45 and 11AM?!?

On the plus side, as stated by other reviewers the beds are fantastic. Almost as comfortable as my bed at home with down pillows, down comforter, and pillowtop mattress. The dual shower heads in the bathroom are also nice but I had to duck to wash my hair and face (5'11"). It is a shame that they could not get the service or the details right at this hotel because the property seems to have a lot of potential to be a very nice 4 star hotel. I might stay here again if ever in the Detroit area because the hotwire price was pretty good and the bed was extremely comfortable. But don't expect much more than that.

First this is NOT a four star hotel! I am usually a 2-3 star hotel type of person, I usually just like a nice bed and a clean room. I would give this place 3 stars, but heavens no not a four star rating. Got a great deal off hotwire for 75 bucks so I can't complain about the price (would have been erked if paid 150 bucks!).

The good:
It was clean, comfortable and the bed was awesome!

The not so great:
Elevators need an overhaul, toilet paper holder hanging off the wall, wall paper coming off the bathroom wall, plastic toilet seats - note all things that really didn't bother me, but makes the four star hotel rating a bit of an overexageration. Only thing that irritated me was the staff, some of the staff were very friendly and the other half were very rude.

If you use hotwire & spend only 75 bucks for a night I don't think you will be dissapointed (that bed was great!) BUT don't expect 4 stars as they advertise. If you spend over a 150 bucks like the Westin advertises on their website thinking you are getting a 4 star hotel I think you will be dissapointed.

Spent a week at this hotel (July 23 - 26, 2007) for business. The hotel seems to have been another chain at some point and Westin took it over. Its in the midst of a very large office park, which makes finding the hotel difficult. Its attached to all the other buildings of the park, and so parking is really bizarre, as mentioned in other postings. Further, if you give your co-worker the car and decide to walk, getting to other restaurants is difficult and isolated. If you decide to walk anywhere, rethink and stop. Instead, take the complimentary shuttle that runs until around 11:15 PM.

The room was big and spacious. Although much like other reviews, the fixtures themselves were a little dated. I had a bad lamp which stayed broken through my stay. The showerheads were too low. But the desk was great, the bed was typical Westin (i.e. best beds in the business) and the towels were soft. Toiletries were good, but not as good as the W's Bliss line.

I did not eat at the restaurant, but had a few beers in the bar. Nice place, well priced beer selection. The desk folks, and more importantly, the doorman, valet and shuttle drivers were very nice, gave great food recommendations, and gave great directions. In sum, the common areas could use some sprucing up, but this was a very pleasant stay.
