This used to be one of two places to go for Detroit-style pizzas in our area. Sadly, no longer. After a so-so antipasto salad, our server had to apologize that the pizza was too burned to serve, so we had to wait until another was prepared. The toppings (pepperoni and Italian sausage) were overly spicy. But the real disappointment was that the center of the pizza was not really hot, just warm, while the crusty side parts were as they should have been right out of the oven. And the toppings and cheese were a little dry. How is that possible? I began to wonder if perhaps the pie had been pre-baked and then finished to order. Whatever the reason, we're sorry to cross Shield's off our list, but there's better pizza to be had a few miles away. That may explain that a lively sports bar/restaurant was all but deserted on a weekday evening when the Tigers were on all the TVs in the restaurant. Everyone else was eating pizza a few miles up the road, buddy!
