“SECOND CITY COME TO SOUTH HAVEN”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 25, 2012

This is a typical Hampton Inn that met the usual high Hamton Inn standards.Nothing more, nothing less. The staff are friendly and the place is clean and well maintained. It's located close to the interstate and about a 5-7 minute drive into downtown South Haven. There is an ice cream shop located across the street. The city is about a two hour drive from Chicago. That offers a quick weekend getaway from the big city. If you want to be surrounded by folks from the Second City, look no farther. For me, I'm heading to Tracers city.

This is a typical roadside Hampton, a decent place to stay. The Hilton computer system had been down for some time when we arrived, plus the room keys weren't working, making the front desk clerk very frazzled, but she did a good job of managing things. Our room was clean and the breakfast was good, and the hotel location wasn't far from downtown and the beach.

We were lucky to get a points reservation for a Friday night a few days ahead of time. The hotel is situated just off the highway, about a mile from downtown South Haven. It's a rather nondescript exterior and a nicely decorated typical Hampton interior. We had no problems with our room and a lovely view of Sherman Dairy Bar across the road - we could watch the crowds gather! Our room was clean and comfortable, the breakfast bar well stocked (good job by the guy working it), and all staff friendly.

Up until about springtime of this year, this Hampton inn was one of my favorites. Starting in maybe April of 2012, it took a nosedive downhill. Long, frustrating check-in. Rooms kind of dirty, then later rooms with burned out lights not replaced or broken chairs, etc. Breakfast that is supposed to be starting at 6 am is still not ready at 6:30 or nearly 7:00. It's like someone stopped caring, or a management change or something. I will stay at the Holiday Inn across the street from now on.

I have stayed at this hotel several times with good results but this time was a disappointment. The first room I was assigned had open shampoo and conditioner bottles and there were long hairs stuck to the shower wall. I asked to move and was quickly accommodated, in fact they offered to move my luggage for me. The next room was fine.
Breakfast the first day was very good. Cheese/scrambled eggs and turkey sausages. 2nd day not so good. The "entre" was potatoes and bacon. No eggs to be found.
I stayed there 7/6-7/9 2012.

We stayed at this Hampton a few years ago and decided to go back. It is an easy way to visit South Haven for a few days. The breakfast is just OK, but what do you expect for a free breakfast? It is nice to go down and have some decent coffee without having to drive anywhere. The hotel is clean although I think the air conditioning had a hard time keeping up in the hallways. The room was cool, though. The staff here is so nice. We brought our bikes and I asked if there was anywhere we could store them they put them in their office area. Anytime we needed them we just went to the desk and they happily helped get them out for us. No matter who was on duty, they were all happy to help out. Very nice--we'll be back for sure!

Stayed one night for the 4th of July fireworks at the beach in South Haven (which were amazing). The room was very tight and small, but we didn't mind too much as it was for 1 night only. Room was clean and the bedding was updated (no creepy old bedspreads).A few tiles in the bathroom were cracking and it was in desperate need of some fresh grout. Our view was the fast food place next door and the location is less than ideal and a good 3-5 minute drive to downtown South Haven.

The exercise room was small and not air conditioned and although there was a fan blowing, in 90 degree heat it didn't do much to cool me or the room. The pool area was also steamy, which would be great in winter, but not so much in July.
My only other complaint would be that the breakfast offerings were very unhealthy and there was not a whole grain in sight. Biscuits and gravy (ew), what I think was french toast, ultra sugary muffins, plain white bagels and sugary cereals. There was literally nothing for my family to eat except for bananas. This is pretty standard in Hampton Inns, but I'm writing it here hoping the management will see and add some whole grain cereal or bread and a milk alternative (like almond milk) for those who are vegan and simply don't want to eat junk.

When we arrived, our room smelled of smoke (it is a smoke-free hotel) but they quickly provided us with a new room and had a refrigerator brought up for us at our request. The staff were all very friendly and helpful.

Overall a pretty mediocre experience and not worth the $178 we paid due to it being a holiday.
