What a wonderful place to visit if you are a nature lover. We were visiting Michigan's Upper Peninsula for the first time and this was one of the places we had on our list to visit. And are we ever glad we did. First, we stopped in to the Visitor Center and the people there were extremely helpful and friendly. They pointed out 2 osprey and their nest high in a tree which we viewed with the telescope. Then we did the 7-mile Marshland Wildlife Drive -- spectular -- bring your binoculars and your camera too! We saw swans, beavers, loons, turtles, eagles, herons and my favourite: 2 sandhill cranes which were walking on the road ahead of us. We actually drove both loops to make sure that we didn't miss anything. Only negative thing was that the deer flies were so very annoying that we had to roll up our car windows. Although they didn't bite, they just wouldn't leave us alone. After we walked the Pine Ridge Nature Trail. All in all, a wonderful place to visit and can't beat the admission price!

A pair of sandhill cranes welcomed us in the lawn as we drove in. I wished I'd snapped a picture of them at the time as they were gone when we left and we didn't see more during our stay.

It was drizzling and cool the day we visited. We'd planned to take one of the local canoe trips through lower end of the refuge, but the weather was not cooperating so we took the 7 mile wildlife drive instead. I imagine that on a better day, there would have been even more to see, but we did get a good view of the large swan population, some loons, various ducks, monarch caterpillars, butterfies, an osprey, and eagle nests. There were many places to pull off and take photos, not that traffic was an issue on the day we were there, and also, a few senic overlook places to get out of the car. The eagle nest view sites were well marked and easy to spot.

The gift shop was tiny, but had an amusing display of animal puppets of various sizes, of which we bought two. They also had an abundance of books on all sorts of outdoor and wildlife topics.

The visitor center offered the best kid friendly display I've come across in any similar place - an entire table of pelts, feathers, bones, skulls and full mounted animals for everyone to touch and examine. There was also a neat sand table with piles of animal foot stamps to make your own tracks.

Over 95,000 acres large. Visitor center has informative displays and a small gift shop for books, shirts, etc.. Nice trails and a seven mile auto tour, great for birding, use your vehicle as a blind. Lots of Loons! It was nice to hear them again.
