“Wonderful Restaurant!”
Reviewed November 25, 2012

The menu is really exceptional and the food exceptionally prepared. The staff are incredibly friendly, professional, warm, receptive and accommodating. The atmosphere is incomparable, with an exclusive view of the shipping canal, and massive Great Lakes ships passing by regularly. We really enjoyed each and every dish, from appetizers through entree to dessert. Everything was exceptional, and the prices are disproportionately low given the quality. The restaurant made wine is very, very good too, which adds to the experience. We will be faithful patrons of this restaurant. Our 7 year old daughter enjoyed the soup so much we had to place an order to go so she could take it for lunch at school next day! It was tremendously good. Fresh ingredients and vibrant flavour! This is a couples, friends, family, business or solo restaurant! Completely inviting all around!

“We recommend Karl's Cuisine every chance we get.”
Reviewed November 8, 2012

My wife and I both consider dining at Karl's to be a special event. When asked by out of town guests / tourists, to recommend a good restaurant, we always think of, and recommend Karl's first.

“Over Rated”
Reviewed October 18, 2012

Reading the other reviews, this place is highly over-rated. The meals we ate were average; nothing special, and the price was expensive for the product we were served. The $4.00 additional up charge for an under-sized salad was an insult. The salad was the size of McDonald's $1 side salad. Atmosphere is totally lacking. The walls are still paneled in slat wall. Obviously the building was a former souvenir shop. A view of the ships passing thru the locks? C'mon folks! You have to look over two rows of cars parked out front to be able to see (only) the superstructure and stack of any ships passing thru the locks which are 200 feet across the street!

Thank you for responding. Although, we may not agree with your opinion, we do appreciate all responses from our guests.

It is our policy when we receive a review that is negative and or below our high standards we take extreme care in evaluating it. We were surprised with your review in every area. As you can see by the 80+ reviews we have received, your rating is in the bottom 2%, hence the surprise.

We take pride in serving our guests a product that is excellent in taste and served with fresh wholesome ingredients made and served by great human beings. Many items are bought from local farmers and almost always made in our own kitchen. Unfortunately, we do not live in a perfect world and although rare, errors happen in our cafe as they do in many aspects of this world. Our amazing kitchen and front of the house staff do everything possible to compensate and apologize when things do go wrong. We are thankful and proud of their ability to project a kind, joyful, and peaceful environment for our guests. We believe there was no error in your visit as you did not mention one, but if there was we don't doubt our staff's response. We are basing your review strictly as an opinion, which we are all entitled to give.

We too are insulted that you compared our standards to a fast food company by comparing our side dinner salad to their side salad. It's like comparing polyester to cotton or even better yet, silk. Our fresh romaine lettuce comes in whole on the head, washed and trimmed in house and spun in our salad spinner every morning. We use (when available) fresh hand picked vegetables from local farmers all cut in house, Traverse City dried cherries, our own handmade glazed pecans and croutons, high quality gourmet cheeses, and made from scratch salad dressings. The place you compared us too, well we all know how their salads come in - premade from an institutionalized setting with many foreign grown products (that are grown with who knows what kind of fertilizers, fungicides etc...,) hydrogenated artificially preserved cheese, ethanol sprayed veggies to preserve a fresh look, and salad dressing filled with more petroleum and chemically engineered products than real food. Also, our salad is served by a friendly gracious wait person while you are seated - you don't have to stand in line and wait for your food. No more needs to be said...

FYI, the building was built to hold a bakery before we became a tenant. As tenants we don't have the freedom/expenses (our top priorities lie in our staff and food products) to renovate an already clean and well maintained building. We do the best we can within a budget and keep our place super clean and inviting as mentioned by the majority of our reviewers.

Our windows are higher than the height of the cars so they don't play a part in your view and my goodness, having a 1,000 footer, 50+ feet high freighter pass you from 200 feet away is breathtaking. Yes, one would need to be outside to get the grand view of the whole ship but much can be seen from our cafe. Also, we have upper deck outdoor dining in the summer. While dinning on the upper deck you are level with a freighters deck and can speak with the crew as the ship goes by and see a spectacular view of Canada.

Again, thank you and sincerely,

Chef Karl and Paula Nelson

“A great place to eat and sight see the Soo Locks”
Reviewed September 28, 2012

We found this place and was not disappointed. The food was great and the view was great. The view of the locks is great. The menu has some local fair as well as some great options. The wine list of local wines is very good. We will eat here again.
