If you really want to get an idea how these locks work, take this ride. It's a blast going thru the locks. The guide is full of interesting information concerning both the American locks and Canadian Locks. They also have free kennels if you are travelling with dogs. Just make sure you don't take the last tour because everything locks up before you get back.

This is a 2 hour tour of the Soo Locks and harbor area on both sides of the locks. It is a very nice tour, very well narrated. You go through the American Locks and the Canadian Locks, and you go by a steel mill, still running. We really enjoyed it. After the tour, we had sandwiches in the café in the ticket building, which were good. They have tours almost every hour during the day, which makes it very convenient. Also, the ticket office is right next to the Museum Ship Valley Camp.

Took the tal hour tour through the Soo Locks and enjoyed it very much. The narration was excellent and informative. We "locked through" on the American side, coming from Saint Mary's river, and rising to Lake Superior. On the return, we went through a Canadian side lock.
The narrator described the function of the locks, and also described the mineral mining and distribution of the minerals that are deposited at the Lock area. Hard to describe the interesting complexity of the area in a short description, but it is very interesting!
There are also several neat "cut stone", hand-crafted buildings; again, narrated nicely.
Our 8 year old daughter enjoyed it (2 hours long), but several younger children were antsy and crying. Probably 4 or 5 years old is the youngest that would enjoy the trip.

This was a 2 hour tour, with a trip through the American locks on the way and through the Canadian on the way back. You get a good look at the Essar Steel Mill, which was fascinating for my husband. We had sandwiches from the cafe in the ticket building, and they were good. It's a great thing to do when it's really hot outside. The historical commentary was also interesting.
