Arrived at the locks just as a large boat was coming in. The viewing area is very large, and we had good view of what was happening. Lots of historical information inside the museum as well as information about the boats coming through and schedule of when boats would arrive later in the day.
The whole system is supported by our tax dollars, so no cost for this educational experience.

Sault Saint Marie is a very interesting town. We visited the Soo Locks and we enjoyed watching the barges go through the locks. However, we were a little disappointed because you could not get close to the locks... you had to stand in a glass enclosed building and look out... you were too far away to really see the action as the barges go through the locks. We have visited many locks in the U.S. and other countries and we have always been able to sit on benches near the locks.

It's fun to watch the boats enter and exit the locks- and the museum that's on the property is a really interesting source of historical and factual information about the area and the locks specifically. If you're in Sault Ste. Marie, check it out!

We liked the 2 hour tour a lot. It is amazing to view the locks up close...both US side and Canadian. I plan on returning with my grandson and have him experience it as well.

The locks are fascinating at any time, but if you can arrange to visit on the last Friday of June (each year) for Engineer's Day it is extraordinary! Plan your trip in advance because 10,000+ people come for the event. On Engineer's Day they allow the public to walk across the locks to the inner islands and to tour the administration buildings located there. Imagine being on the inner islands when a freighter is going through the lock! We happened to be there when there was a flurry of freighter traffic. There were up to five freighters in sight at one time - two in the locks and three waiting. There is a two-story viewing stand near the visitor's center that afford an excellent view of the locks to watch the ships go through the locks. It is free and available any time the visitor's center is open.
