This is an interesting engineering wonder to visit with young kids. To make the Tour sensible and complete, take soo locks boat ride. This tour will explain how Soo locks work and shows surroundings of Algoma steel plant and Canadian side Sault ste Marie.

Pretty neat place to visit. We really enjoyed watching the locks as the ships came and left. Learning about the history of the Soo Locks and how it all works definitely added to the experience.

You learn a lot about shipping and how the locks work, and there is an elevated viewing area with a great view

My husband and I have been to the Soo Locks several times. He loves following Marine Traffic and watching the ships pass thru the locks. The days we visited were cold, overcast and rainy, but we still managed to spend a few hours on the observation deck to get some great photos. Make sure to check out the Visitors Center. The woman at the desk was a real pleasure to talk to. She shared lots of information regarding the ships passing thru. There is a board showing a schedule of what ships are due when, including their name and length. She also recommended we visit the ferry landing (Rotary Island Park) near Sugar Island, which we did. We were able to see several ships navigate the currents as they headed to the Locks. Great visit!

Interesting to see how the ships pass through. Nice viewing area but it pays to get there early, especially if you want to take pictures. Some of the viewing is behind glass/plastic panels and some is open which is better for pictures. If visiting it is definitely something you ought to see.

This was amazing site to see. Watch a boat go from the Lake Michigan into Lake Huron and a Hugh freighter go from Lake Huron into Lake Michigan! If you haven’t seen it Go!

We had a wonderful cruise on the St. Lawrence and through two sets of locks on a partly cloudy in August. The history of the locks was very interesting, and the boat staff was very friendly. The boat has a canopy on it (to protect passengers from the Sun) and a place to buy refreshments (plus a bathroom).

I could have done without the lengthy tour of the mining facility - it smelled and detracted from the overall beauty of the river.

Note that there are two arrival/departure points in Michigan, which is not at all clear on the website. Each has its own pros and cons; I guess it just matters where you park!

great viewing area and free! Had plenty ships come thru to see the wonder of this system. Close up view and a great history center for more info.

We stopped at SSM specifically to see the locks. Unfortunately there were storms and high winds and the locks were not allowing barges through or people out on the locks. While this was disappointing, the bigger disappointment was that they didn't even open the visitors center. The gates were locked with no signs or anything indicating the locks were closed. No one came out to talk to us and tell us what was happening. We had to hear it by word of mouth from people on the street.

it is interesting to see the ships, but does take awhile for them to transgress thru the locks so younger children could get bored.
