We've visited Bella Vita suites during Christmas and stayed overnight. The hotel room was well appointed with trendy furniture and appliances. I loved the big whirlpool tub in the bathroom. The complimentary toiletries were AVEDA products and the hotel was right in the downtown location. Overall I'll love to go back again.

Booking it: We stayed during the off-season in February for a 3-day weekend. Since we are brought our two children, we could not stay in the Inn, but we stayed off-site at #13 “Vintage View” located at 11 Chestnut Street, Douglas, Michigan. It is less than five minutes from the Bella Vita Spa and Suites downtown location. Our rate was a total of $343.44 after tax for two nights, quite the bargain!

The Room: It is really like having your own apartment! Note: There is no maid service at the off-site unit.
Bedroom: We had a King-size bed, (no television in the bedroom) washer and dryer in the closet (bring hangers if you need them, there are four wire hangers.)
The bathroom has new tiled shower/tub, double sinks with glass bowls, a stained glass window, it has modern conveniences with the charm of an older home. (Bring your own shampoo, conditioner, soap. There is a hair dryer and a small sample soap and small sample shampoo, towels, washcloths and hand towels under the sink. There is plenty of room to put your things away in drawers or under the sink!)
In the living room about six people can sit comfortably on two chairs and two small sofas. One sofa turns into a bed. There is a television in the living room (no dvd player so bring your own if you need it. Also: no telephone on site.)
The kitchen: looks brand new! Plenty of glasses, dishes, silverware, toaster, blender, a baking sheet, measuring cup, pots and pans, microwave, dishwasher, full fridge/freezer, oven, stove-top and an island for food prep. It’s a good idea to bring hand soap for the kitchen sink if you don’t like to wash your hands with dish soap. There's a small grocery store around the corner so we made our own dinner one night!
Outside: There is more than one unit attached to this house (I think four in total), all the units share an outdoor pool, pool house and hot tub (looks like four people can use it at once.) We did not use it. A porch/deck is part of the unit. We stayed in unit 1.
The view: Looking out our kitchen window and door wall we could see a small deck, the pool area, some homes and beyond that: water. (Not a beach.) The other views are of the neighborhood.

When we arrived at the Bella Vita Spa and Suites in downtown Saugatuck, we met the young couple that owns the building and spa. They showed us a couple rooms and we noticed that they have worked hard to make the rooms feel modern, romantic (some rooms have showers with duel shower-heads!) and comfortable. The off-site unit where we stayed is managed by this couple but someone else owns it. Which brings me to the one downside of our stay:

The con: On Saturday evening someone was insistently banging on our door. It was after dark and we do not know anyone in the area. It turns out it was the owner- who wanted to inform us that her phone number is in the binder of information. Not only was it unsettling to be disturbed this way, it was completely unnecessary. If we decide to stay here again, perhaps we could head off her visit by calling her right away to tell her we see her phone number in the binder. This is the only negative in a otherwise pleasant stay.

The pro’s: Nice house, well-equipped, close to Saugatuck and about 20 minutes to Douglas. (In February there was an Ice Breakers festival in Douglas with a chili competition, ice sculpting, ice skating, a lighthouse/beach. The shops in their downtown area were fun: Blueberry store, Chocolate Café, bead store, etc.) In Saugatuck we enjoyed Phil’s Bar and Grill for dinner- I enjoyed the lobster Cobb salad-, a French boutique and art gallery, décor stores. Overall, a very nice visit.

Room Tip: Couples: Stay at the downtown location! Families: Staying off-site will give you more privacy and a...

Went on Christmas day - was welcomed with a bottle of wine and the piedemond suite with a nice whirlpool tub. Very nice rooms and great location. Had bought the room with groupon for $85 - well worth it , super room with fireplace and good service. The owner came over and greeted us with wine and welcomed us in.

Bella Vita Spa and Suites offered a great location for our holiday shopping and celebrations. It was nice to walk everwhere and leave our car parked. The Piedmont Suite was cool--kind of funky/Pottery Barn-type decor. We liked the complimentary snacks and beverages; it's quite rare to have no charge for this kind of extra. Bed was good, room was clean; on the down side, there was quite a bit of noise from the spa and outdoors. Wally's Bar was a lot of fun for watching the Lions game and enjoying some drinks. As far as shopping goes, Santa Fe Trading Co. was our favorite.

Room Tip: Check out rooms upstairs for a quieter location.

When travelling to Saugatuck, we will surely choose the Bella Vita next time. The room was great (Piedmont Suite). Very nicely decorated & modern. Brick wall and wooden planks on ceiling. Warm colors. Comfortable bed. We had a door from our suite right to the outside alley, close to where parking is. Each room has their own parking spot which is very helpful. Kevin was very friendly and helpful, giving us good recommendations on restaurants, biking locations, etc. Looking forward to visiting again.

The room is not large, but it is nice with high ceilings. One wall is brick, the ceiling is knotty pine, one wall is wood. There is a small kitchen area with a sink, counter, microwave and fridge. There are two each of free bottles of water, muffins and cookies. The TV is a nice, large, HD flat screen. There is an elevator from the main floor to second floor where rooms are located for easy access and getting luggage to rooms. The spa receptionists also act as hotel staff. They are nice but not up to the level of dedicated hotel staff. The one negative is the bathroom. It has bare cement floors (the decorating is minimalistic) and looks and feels “dank”. The walk-in shower is LARGE with TWO separate shower heads - one is hand held. The toilet seat is like you would find in a public restroom. The location is right on Butler St. so you can walk out the door and start shopping if you want. We did not hear any noise from the street or from other sources - though we were there on a Monday night after Labor day so the town was fairly quiet. We had a problem with the water draining from our bathroom sink. The manager was there within 10 minutes and resolved the issue promptly. The king bed was very comfortable. The hotel/spa entrance is in a passageway running between Butler street and a small parking area so it might be hard to find the entrance unless you know where it is.

My husband and I have been going to the Bella Vita for many years now... and we LOVE it!!! It is one of our favorite places to stay, the location is perfect. Kevin and Lindsey, the owners, are wonderful and so helpful with info on the town and activities to do. The spa is amazing as well, we have had massages and pedicures and both were great! We love the rooms, they are more contemporary than most of the places in Saugatuck. We also love that there are fireplaces in each room. This town is perfect, and Bella Vita is definitely the place to stay while you're visiting.
