Captains Quarters Motel
Ranked #1 of 10 Hotels in Saugatuck
Reviewed August 6, 2006

On August 4, 2006, my boyfriend and I drove from Chicago to Saugatuck for a weekend trip. We stayed at the Captains Quarters for $150 a night. From the road, the Captains Quarters appears to be a cozy motel with more heart than a Days Inn but without the price of a bed and breakfast. However, we were very disappointed with our stay. On the first night, we noticed ants in the bathroom and dressing area. We told the manager (also the owner). He said he would bring ant traps, but he never did. The ants were in the room the rest of the weekend. On the second night, my boyfriend asked the manager for an iron. (I wanted to iron a linen summer outfit to wear to a show in town.) The manager said the only working iron had been left in another guest's room, and the guest had left the motel. My boyfriend asked the manager to retrieve the iron, but the manager refused and argued with my boyfriend until he threatened not to pay some of the motel charges. In addition to these incidents, we were also irritated because the bathtub was cracked on the bottom and we had to watch not to cut ourselves, the window was extremely difficult to close, the mattress was old and mushy, the towels were gray and threadbare, and the room was small and musty. As a final note, we are not especially picky travelers. We have traveled around the world and stayed in motels and hostels with conditions that I am embarrassed to detail here. But for $150, we expect cleanliness and courtesy.

I would like to take this chance to respond to the Aug 2007 disappointment review. Since this is the only review that shows up for Captains Quarters in Saugatuck it is a very unfortunate situation and circumstance for my business. I remember these guests well. The motel was full that particular weekend with wedding guests. All of the guests needed an iron and unfortunately by the time that these particular guests asked for an iron they were all being used. They had requested that I enter a room where there was an iron avaliable even though I explained to them that I would never enter a room for any reason other than an emergency (i.e. water leak) when the customer was not present. This is what set the situation for the weekend. Our towels are not thread barren, I purchase new towels yearly. Our mattresses are very comfortable and they are replaced on a regular basis. We do not have ants in our rooms, they are inspected regularly and we have regular pest inspections because we serve the public and our standards are very high. If there were ants in the room it would have been handled in an efficient and prompt matter. To the best of my recollection they never mentioned they had ants in their room during their visit, they only mentioned it when they wrote their review (that was the first I heard of an ant situation and there did not seem to be a problem after they had checked out. My housekeeping staff would have alerted me if there were ants). And last but not least the hole in the bathtub had been discovered upon the previous guests departure (11:00 AM on the day that Disappointed checked in). There was no time to fix the tub and since we were booked for the weekend there were no other rooms avaliable. I alerted them to the fact that the previous guests had somehow managed to put a dime size hole in the bottom of the tub. They did not seem to have a problem with that at the time of check in, they said that they wanted the room and they would be okay with the situation. The tub/shower unit was replaced the Monday after they checked out. This is my business, I have grown it over the past 20 plus years and that is why I felt I must respond to this particular review. My only review and this is what I get!! Please do not let one bad review keep you from coming to Captains Quarters in Saugatuck, MI. You will not be sorry that you came. Paul Cook
