“Cool Place w/ Perfect Location”
Reviewed April 22, 2012

My husband and I just attended a wedding in Saugatuck and we stayed at the Ship & Shore. It is a very cool, old-school motel on the water. It's not the trump towers, but it fits perfectly in Saugatuck (don't go there expecting to find big city style chain hotels). The breakfast was good and so was our view. The staff was friendly (not sure about other reviews saying contrary). Most importantly- location, location, location!!!!

We just returned from our vacation to Saugatuck, and while we were there we stayed at the Ship n Shore. It was truly an unexpected pleasure. When we researched Saugatuck, we found the Ship n Shore to be the most economical place downtown, so we booked it. When we got there, we found that our room had a great view and a very comfortable bed (I took a nap upon arrival). The front desk staff was friendly, and we had the pleasure of meeting the managers Brian and Courtney. They were extremely friendly and informative about Saugatuck and what to do while there. The motel is an older building, but the rooms look recently updated and the place was very clean. We were able to walk everywhere we wanted to go. It was a great place to stay at a very reasonable price. I would also recommend it to anyone looking to vacation in West Michigan. In fact, we already booked a room for this summer so we can lay by the pool and watch the boats go by.

Room Tip: The Upstairs rooms have beautiful views. No elevator, but there weren't too many stairs.

I had the pleasure of visiting this motel in beautiful Saugatuck, MI. It's too bad this place is run the way it is. It could be a great place to stay if new ownership/management came in and operated it like professionals.

It is also very dated. I'll be staying elsewhere on my next trip to Saugatuck.

Room Tip: To get the best room possible, go to another motel.

My husband and I recently had a two night stay at the Ship & Shore Motel in Saugatuck. We had a room overlooking the Kalamazoo River on the garden side. It was awesome, everything right at our fingertips. We parked the car and walked to all the shops, restaurants and attractions in town. The pool area with large hot tub was great! Hotel staff were friendly and accommodating. I would certainly stay there again if in Saugatuck!

We stayed one night in Sept. The location, on the water and near town, is fabulous. The grounds of the hotel are clean, with nice available outdoor decks, tables and pool. The hotel itself is definitely showing its age, which can largely be ignored if focusing on the great location. Unfortunately, the female clerk at check-in was not very friendly or attentive.
Overall, the location and proximity to town offset the hotel's age - we had an enjoyable time in Saugatuck.

I was shocked at how long it has been since this motel has been updated! It's right out of the 60's. While is was clean, it was not worth $150 per night. They are still using the old key method which is not secure. The sliding glass door in our room didn't lock and was missing a couple vertical blinds. The bathroom door didn't close all the way due to years of moisture and swelling. No vent fan in the bathroom, so the room was completely covered in moisture after getting out of the shower. The heating unit didn't work properly.
For the price of the room and considering they are booked every weekend, it's a shame the owner(s) have not invested into remodeling and updating.

Room Tip: Call ahead when booking at a place you've never stayed before. Ask when it was last updated.

This is a very sweet place to relax. It has been in the town of Saugatuck for many years and continues to go through metamorphosis. Beautiful grounds, new pool and right on the Kalamazoo River in the heart of Saugatuck. Just park the car and enjoy. The service is very good and the rooms are clean. Besides your room, they have a place to play games and watch TV. They have couches throughout for just relaxing and boat watching. The town is full of great art and wonderful restaurants.

Room Tip: Just ask for "on the water".
