Coral Gables is the same to day as it was 20 years ago-overpriced average food with a great view. Don't underestimate the experience though-lunch on the terrace watching the boats is a to do for our summer, shopping in Saugatuck afterward.

I have been to Coral Gables in Saugatuck many times and have had great meals, service, and enjoyed eating on the deck.

We shopped Saugatuck on July 4th weekend for awhile and eventually sought out a restaurant for lunch. Most places were packed but since there were just two of us, the hostess at Coral Gables found us an inside table. The deck seemed to hot outside, so we thought it would be a good idea to have some cool air, but soon discovered the air inside was not so cool at all. Our server was BORED TO DEATH with her job and treated us exactly that way. Not a single smile on her lips at any time. In fact then entire staff never cracked a smile. It could be because they were severely understaffed on a holiday weekend. In fact, plenty of empty tables around us as they turned away lunch seekers, and the bar area (which is huge) had a ton of empty tables. Clearly they are not interested in reaping from the tourists who visit in the summer. The food was bland. The coconut shrimp was overly done and a bit greasy. The Ceasar wrap was also quite bland. Pretty soon you realize the entire Coral Gables experience is all the same...bland service, bland atmosphere, bland staff...what? Time to close this place down, level it, and start over. I don't care about all the history of the place, or the old photos on the wall. I care about good service, good food, nice surroundings...none of which exist anymore in this place. It is a ghost.

After walking around shopping the boutiques on a hot day, we were very hungry and noticed some very nice smelling barbeque smoke coming from this restaurant. We wanted to sit outdoors, but only the tiki deck, one of the three outdoor seating areas, was open with no wait. When we were seated in this bar deck, we discovered that there were no awnings or umbrellas for shade. We were told that they would blow away. It was brutally hot up there.

We ordered lemonade, which came in 12 oz plastic cups..We also ordered the full rack of ribs and a 16 inch pizza. The ribs were fine, with a "house special " sauce that tasted a lot like baked beans. The potato was very small and came with tiny packets of butter and sour cream. We were never offered wet wipes or wet cloths and had to sue our lemonade ice as fingertip washes.

The pizza was good, not great, but when I asked for Parmesan cheese, I was told they didn't have any. I thought that was strange in a place that served pasta and pizza. Later, I noticed a shaker of Parm on another table. I asked our waiter, Tommy, about it and he said "oh, somebody must have gone downstairs to get her some." When I joked, laughingly, that it was nice that someone would do that for her, he reluctantly asked if I wanted him to go get me some.

This sort of experience is typical of Saugatuck. No extras, no garnishes, lots of plastic ware and bored, reluctant staff. For $50.00 I would like to get a little more....maybe a wet cloth for the ribs?

Like all views in Saugatuck, lots of boats, nothing special.

we have been coming to Saugatuck for a decade. Coral Gables is a Saugatuck institution, but you can't trade on a name.

decided to show up for lunch today, just two of us. waited 10 minutes to be seated on the deck, view nice as always - but deck absolutely filthy. server very friendly and polite, and obviously overworked. ordered the crispy chicken salad and Coral Gables Club Sandwich with fries.

so, 75 minutes and two incorrect order attempts later, the kitchen and server finally grasped the concept of communication and our food arrived. it was edible, but less than special. plus, it took three tries for two simple orders to be fulfilled.

there is nothing glamorous, good, chic or appealing any longer about Coral Gables. it has somehow outlived civil unrest, disco, yuppies, monica lewinski, W, and is poised to surpass Obamacare as well. put a bullet in it already.

the view from the deck overseeing the Kalamazoo River is nice. but this ship is drifting without a rudder. don't waste your money and go elsewhere.
