The hotel was in a great location and easy to find, so we booked it - even though it was very pricey ($175.00). The lobby was nice and it looked clean. Our room was not exceptional, but it was clean. The hotel staff was very congenial and pleasant. We enjoyed the beach and fireworks and fell into bed at 11:00 p.m. Around 2:00 that next morning the fire alarm went off. We naturally took the seven flights of stairs and promptly exited the building. We waited outside for 45 minutes while the alarm continued to blare. A fire truck never came to the scene. We did not see any management. There was no communication with those of us outside in our pajamas. Finally my husband went inside to find there was only one staff member on duty. He was frantically answering telephones and trying to calm down the hotel guests. Rumors were flying around to everyone that the management had cancelled the fire truck run (because they would be charged extra money if it was a false alarm) Families did not want to head back to their room without a fireman declaring that all was safe. We were told not to worry about it, the manager on duty thought it was a false alarm, we should go back to our rooms. You can imagine the angry guests by this time. Finally one of the guests called the fire department on their cell phone and within 2 minutes the trucks were there. We were standing outside for 2 hours in the middle of the night with two small children waiting for a fireman to declare all was well. Needless to say many people left the hotel and demanded their money back. The manager told us that if we would stay we could sleep in and not have to check out until 1 pm the next day. That next morning we were informed that we had to be out by 11 and that there was no discount, or money back or any apology for the disaster the night before. I do understand a "false alarm", and I would have never asked for any apology, discount or my money back for such an event. However, under the circumstances 1) the management would not call the fire department, 2) we were kept waiting for 2 hours, 3) they did not adhere to the promise that we could stay later because of a short night.... I would never recommend this hotel to anyone.

The rumors are untrue...management did not cancel the fire department. There would have been no charge for their coming, even though the alarm was a false alarm. We spent hundreds of dollars to get our alarm company here on emergency holiday overtime to resolve the issue with the alarm panel

Secondly, nobody was denied a late checkout on that day. All requests for a later checkout were honored. The situation called for complete flexibility and that was exactly how we responded.

The staff and management of the hotel spent that entire morning apologizing to anybody who had been inconvenienced, not to mention refunding thousands of dollars.

We do sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.

After reading all of the negative reviews here, I was hesitant to book at the Silver Beach. I am glad I disregarded the negatives here and booked anyway.

The hotel is older, but not ancient. The staff is friendly and helpful. The "pet" rooms are all located on one floor, so we did not notice any "pet related" issues in our room (no hair, ticks, fleas etc as someone else reported....).

Our room (620) was clean and nice - perhaps recently remodeled. The bed was clean and very comfortable - as good a bed as I have seen in a hotel 0 including Marriots etc.

The shower - yes, the head was a bit low - but not unusable. The water pressure was a little low also - but not anything to complain about.

The breakfast consisted of the usual eggs, sausage, waffles, cold ceral, milk, juice and coffee. It is free with the room, and just as good as most any other freebie breakfast. I only had coffee at the Silver Beach, instead we walked a block east and south of the hotel and ate a Shu's (opens for brunch at 10).

We attended a wedding in town, and when we returned to the hotel the parking lot was at 100% capacity. I asked the front desk and they told me to put my car along the curb outside the building - essentially "Rock star parking".

So - I would definitely stay here again - as it is located right in the heart of where all the happenings are - a short stroll to the lakeside walk where the flea market and art displays are, and right next to the quaint little "downtown" walking / shopping areas.

A nice place to stay while in St. Joseph - and if you have a pet, you can take your pet to this place with you!

While the hotel is located well, the public relations and management is the worst I have ever seen. The room was adequate, however they did not provide any washclothes at all. The problem was that the fire alarm sounded at 2 a.m. Guests, of course gathered outside of the hotel until the situation could be cleared or a fire found. The night attendant said that he could not see or smell anything. It was reported that the fire dept was not called because the hotel did not wish to pay for a false alarm call. However, the fire dept was called by a guest. The dept. did arrive at 2:45 a.m. to inspect the building. They announced that guests could return to their rooms at 3:30 a.m. Some guests complained and received reimbursement that evening - until the night manager ran out of money. He could not help people with credit cards because he stated he was not authorized. The next morning the hotel manager took a very agressive stance and stated no one was going to receive any consideration for the night events - even if your children were awakened and could not return to sleep. Instead of offering a small but reasonable percentage off for the lack of a nights sleep to everyone (suggested a simple 10% off) the management stated that they were not interested in recognizing their responsibility in keeping guests out of their room from 2a.m. until nearly 3:45 a.m.. The Night manager did tell the guests that they may be permitted to stay in their rooms for an extended period of time rather than needing to exit by 11:00 a.m. However, the morning management stated that anyone who was still in their room after 11:00 a.m. would be charged extra. The hotel shows no consideration for their guests at all. We were not asking for a free night - but even an expression of apology would have been gracious. The hotel shows not consideration for their guests at all. The head management was totally unprofessional.

We're sorry that the housekeeper failed to stock the room with wash clothes. Obviously this was an oversight.

The hotel would not have been charged for a fire department response, and in point of fact we spent hundreds of dollars in emergency overtime fees to our alarm company in order for them to resolve the issue with the alarm. Money would never be an object regarding the safety of the hotel guests and staff.

Anybody who checked out during the event or immediately following was not charged for the night. One guest was sent a refund check. Anybody with a credit card was not charged if they left at that point.

No manager or staff member took an aggressive stance the next morning. Every possible consideration was given by every staff member and manager. Every manager and staff member took responsibility for the event, apologizing profusely, giving thousands of dollars in refunds, delaying the close of breakfast, and offering late checkouts with no charge.

We did everything we could to make up for the inconvenience suffered.

This hotel is not fancy. The area of St. Joseph, however, drives the price up. We stayed here 3 nights during the week. The hotel is close to shops and restaurants, and the beach. Only one elevator was operational which didn't cause to much of a problem. Reading prior reviews almost made us cancel our reservations. We were part of a group and wanted to be in the same hotel though, so we took our chances. We were pleased to get a very comfortable room with a clean bathroom and bed. We would stay there again. It was very convenient to everything we needed.

My husband and I stayed here 2 nights. The lobby was beautiful and the front desk staff was very pleasant. We noticed right off that there are 2 elevators one of which did not work! The other one broke down for a while while we were there. We were on the 6th floor. That was a long walk up. This is a 7 floor hotel!!! Housekeeping staff were very friendly but need to be trained a bit more. There was mold growing around our bathtub and coffee that had been spilled under the rim of our bathroom counter. The shower curtain was cloth and had no liner. We also could not find an ice machine. The pool area seemed dirty with a heavy chlorine smell. We did not use the fitness room or the bar so I have no comment on them. We also paid an extra amount of money for a "lake view" room. This is a rip off! Don't do that. We had a view of a big brick retirement home with a bit of lake around the sides of it. The "view" you get is not worth the extra money!
In all fairness, it was within walking distance to eateries, shopping and the beach. Not to many places to shop though. I would drive a few extra miles and stay in South Haven.
Not happy with our expierence at all.

We just stayed here for a little over a week, and it was a very nice stay. The location was amazing walking distance to everything in town, the room was a little much but seeing as it was the summer it was expected, as to the complaints about the bar from the other reviews i didn't see that, the music wasn't loud, they had a juke box playing all week and they had a good DJ on the weekend that did not start till 10 or 11 at night, all the staff was very helpful and went above what we expected, would defiantly stay again and come back to enjoy the atmosphere at the bar seeing as its in the hotel and you don't have to worry about drinking and walking or driving back to your place of stay

After reading the reviews of this hotel, I was a little nervous about staying here. The cheap rates and location is what made the decision to stay. However, I brought pillows, blankets and air freshener “just in case”! I am happy to report that we did not need them during our two night stay. We arrived at the hotel around noon when check in was not until 3. The front desk was very busy with other guests but they were as prompt as possible. The gentleman was going to let us check in early, however, our room was not ready. He said to come back in about an hour. We used this time to walk around and do some exploring. We returned about an hour and a half later and our room was ready. Check-in was a breeze with the friendly staff. After we got settled in our room, we had some questions about how to get to an attraction. The two men at the front desk were very nice in giving directions. He even went out of his way to print directions from mapquest for us. Service was terrific.
Our room was a king business room. The furniture in the room appeared to be fairly new. The room was clean and comfortable. We had a view of Main Street but we enjoyed being able to see the draw bridge go up and down. The bathroom was stocked with plenty of towels and Bath and Body Works shampoos and soaps. The room also had a refrigerator and microwave which was really nice for keeping and warming up our leftover Silver Beach Pizza! I never had direct contact with housekeeping but they were very speedy. One morning we went to the beach for just a couple of hours, by the time we returned the bed was made up and restocked with towels.
Breakfast at the hotel was very good. I loved being able to make my own waffles. They also had sausage, eggs, cereals, muffins, toast, and bagels. On our visit, the food was always well stocked and plentiful.
The pool was a little chilly for my liking but the hot tub felt nice. The pool area was clean and not exceptionally busy when we visited late in the evening.
Previous posts mentioned something about the hotel smelling smoky. This made me nervous because my husband and I are pretty sensitive to smoke. I didn’t notice a strong odor of smoke nor was the door to the lounge kept open.
The hotel has a very good location. It was an easy walk to everything in town. It was a bit of a hike to Silver Beach. It wasn’t too bad walking to the beach but on the return walk there was lots of stairs.
Over all our stay was nice. If you are looking for luxury, this is probably not the hotel you should seek out. However, it suited our needs for the few days in town. Our only complaint is the slowness of the elevators. One of them was out of service really causing a jam at times. Other than the elevators, it was a great stay. One other thing that was a little weird was the two birds they had in the lobby. Guests seemed to enjoy talking with them though. We would stay again!
