The Red Fox is what used to be the rooftop deck at Memphis Smoke, but new ownership has turned the rather plain deck into a stylish contemporary rooftop establishment, with some of the best views in Royal Oak, perfectly situated at the intersection of 11 Mile and Main Street.
Downstairs is a so-so tex-mex place (Cantina Diablos), and I have no idea if the same company owns both establishments, but if they do, the downstairs folks can take a lesson from the upstairs staff, from their attentive service to the efficiency of the kitchen. The space is half indoors and half out; the outdoor features tables, lounge areas and fire-pit inspired dining areas that offer a nice change in cool evenings or on cooler sunny days. Inside is more traditional, looking like a slightly British version of a sports bar, with plentiful TVs all around you, plus a classy looking bar.
The beer selection is quite good for a pub this size; several British and Irish ales on tap, plus a good selection of American and Michigan brews as well. I've had a number of the appetizers on the menu, the French Onion Dumplings and French Dip Sliders are worth checking out, and the soft pretzels with cheese fondue are a nice change of pace. For dinner, I definitely recommend the Fish & Chips -- fresh Cod, perfectly battered, good portion. Plus it comes with something called mushy peas -- which is exactly what you think it is, and very tasty as well.
The Red Fox is a great addition to Royal Oak's lineup of bars.
